Hi everyone i am currently looking for a defender 90 and was wondering what your thoughts were on the td5 or 300, which is best? Is the td5 engine more gutsy than the 300?

Cheers lee

This has been the Same question I have been asking myself and as long as your not afraid Of the extra electronics I would go for the TD5 (which I probably will)

It depends what you want. the td5 is a much better engine to drive with. It's smoother, it sounds better , it's got more grunt and it's very tuneable.

The 300 is simpler and therefore easier to work on and has less to go wrong.
It's also slightly more reliable but getting old now.

I've had both and loved them both, but I wouldn't go back to a 300 now.

300 is simple tech easy to work on at home.

Td5 is more flexible, smoother and quieter but also more thirsty and has a little more modern tech (electronics) to control it.

I bought a 300tdi last year, given the choice again I'd go Td5 just for the smoothness of them.

300 does suit a defender though, bit rough but simple and long lasting lol.

It all depends on how mechanically savvy you are,

When it comes to keeping it running later in life,

300 parts are cheaper that TD5 for the mean time,

TD5 is more civil, 300 is much more agricultural,

if your going mud plugging, take a 300, less likely to have a fit,

All depends on what you want to do with it,

I have 200tdi ( almost the same) and td5 defenders

personally I find the td5s toruque curve is way to high , its more like a sports car that a tow vehicle or offroader

its smooth and nice to drive everyday but parts are expencive and I find the TDIs are better in the rough for climbing up rocks and such
