You will find many opinions on this and has been discussed in many treads ( use search to find them the subject has been beat to death ) I think most engines are just happy that the oil gets changed. What I do 12,000 miles ( 20,000 km ) full synthetic diesel engine spec. 5w30 winter 10w40 summer both filters every change, I will get heat from some people on the 10w40 but I drive 100 miles (160 km) a day to work and the Disco has over 320000 km ( 199,000 miles ) on it and only one thing worries me it does not leak oil ( knocking on wood ) been working on and driving diesels for 25 years and this the first that didn't leak oil. everything else leaks to make up for it. As far as what brand of oil remember you can not afford to buy cheap sh__ (stuff)

I always think oil change is most important. I was thinking about 10w40 myself as I live in Ireland and it is pretty mild here. I have opted for 5w30 now as we are going in winter. I drive a lot of miles myself and thus want good quality oil.
