Hi, just bought a 2000 discovery2 TD5, been parked up for a while battery died and has a little water ingress issue, and just prior to purchasing wouldnt start, negotiated a discount, took a fooking big gamble, and believed the aa diagnosis which was fuel pump innop.
fuel pump didnt work when ignitiojn was energised and it looked original, so replaced witha known good one, which also doesnt operate when ignition is switched on,
So i put an independent 12v source to pump, and it worked so went throught the bleeding routine, 15sec off 30 on x 6, then left pump connected to 2nd battery, tried key still nothing, squirted some easy start in air intake. its starts briefly first key, but quickly dies 1-2secs, reconnecting pump to main harness and it doenst run, negligable power reading on multimeter .1v-.6v with ign switched on,
changed engine bay fuses, and relay.
have tried fuel reset switch, including thumping it with palm of hand and resetting
q should the engine crank if immobilzed?
wonder if battery disconnect and jump start upset car, or slight dampness has upset it
when its light will look at fuesbox under dash to see if its wet
thanks

lynd

just visually checked fusebox front under dash, and its nice and dry and dusty by the looks of things, where would dampness show itself?
thanks

Which relay did you replace?, the pump's relay(R1) or the main relay(R9) ...anyway both these relays have to do with the pump's feed...if it's immobilised it wouldnt crank...for the inertia fuel cut off switch, try to unplug it and bridge it's pins if you think it's triggered

if no joy you have to trace the feed with multimeter starting from the fusebox untill the pump through all the connectors... which you can find in RAVE

see this for the beginning:

The main relay is located in the engine compartment fuse box and supplies battery voltage to the following:
l ECM.
l MAF.
l Fuel pump relay.
l Cruise control master switch.
l Cruise control RES switch.
l Cruise control SET+ switch.
It is a 4 pin normally open relay and must be energised to provide voltage to the ECM.

Input/Output
The earth path for the main relay is via a transistor within the ECM. When the earth path is completed, the main relay energises to supply battery voltage to the ECM. Interrupting this earth path de-energises the main relay, preventing battery voltage reaching the ECM.
Input to the main relay is via pin 1 of connector C0632, located at the engine compartment fuse box. Output from the main relay is via fuse 1 to the ECM connector C0658 pins 3, 22 and 27. The earth path is via pin 21 of ECM connector C0658.
The main relay can fail in the following ways:
l Relay open circuit.
l Short circuit to vehicle supply.
l Short circuit to vehicle earth.
l Broken return spring.
In the event of a main relay failure any of the following symptoms may be observed:
l Engine will crank but not start.
l If the engine is running it will stop.
For the ECM start up to take place the ignition 'on' (position II) voltage must be greater than 6.0 volts.

I removed this set up and replaced with correct 15A fuse. Vehicle runs fine etc but I have a battery drain. Found dead short across Pos and Neg battery leads (disconnected from battery) and then started checking which circuit by removing fuses one by one. On removing the fuel pump fuse, short goes away.
I see on the forum you have given some keen advice on related issues.
Where do you suggest I go from here? Relays, fuel pump/sender assembly etc?
Thanks,

normally the drain is somewhere between the fuse and the relay then(maybe within the fusebox(i dunno much about D1 wiring check the diagram if you have)...cos the relay must be open when the ignition is off so the rest of the circuit is not 'in line then... put back the fuse, remove the relay and if the drain is still there check the wiring/circuit between these components.

by yhe way...i dont like to give advices in private cos IMO others must learn too from your experience...good luck
