TD5 no glow lights no engine light no fuelpump.. sometimes

Hi,

I own a 2001 TD5 110 Defender. I just have done a 9h straight trip across Spain. The car has always (since I have had it) never had any starting problems, since today I sometimes try to start it, and the fuelpump or glow lights just dont come on. I was parked on a very steep hill and had to back down without power, get the car straight and even remove the Fuelpump fuse and put it back in, that somehow got it back running.

I have read a little bit in the forum, but I dont think it is the imobilizer hence I do get it running. But for some stupid reason I have taking my other key and FOB with me for this trip, could it be that the FOB batterie is dying and I need to replace it? Is this just batterie in and out or do I need to go see a dealer.

Same thing happened to me completely out of the blue.
Just change the fob battery. Takes seconds. Keep a spare inside the motor as they give little or no warning when they discharge.

On that FOB Bat change. Is it a simple in and out or do I have to do some wierd hulu hulu dance for it still to work... Like this guy is saying? Mine is a defender 2001

I finally got round to changing the batteries in both key fobs today. The recommendation is to replace them every 3 years, otherwise you have to go through a whole load of kerfuffle to pair the fob back to the car. The instructions in the handbook are not entirely clear and I confused myself a bit by trying to skip read it, but its actually dead simple.

You'll need:

• A CR2032 button battery, LR recommend Panasonic.
• A small screwdriver to separate the two sides of the fob.
• Your Land Rover!

1. Sit in the drivers seat with the drivers door closed. Keep it closed for the duration of the battery replacement*.
2. Turn the ignition to position II, return to position 0 and remove the key.
3. Gently split the key fob casing into its two parts, taking care not to damage the rubber seal.
4. Slide the old battery out of the clip, avoid touching the circuit board or other components.
5. Insert new battery. The manual says don't leave any finger prints on it which can cause premature discharge.
6. Push the two halves of the fob back together.
7. Operate the key fob at least 4 times to re-synchronise it with the car.
8. Turn the ignition back to position II and you're done.

*The immobiliser has a passive re-arm function which activates within 30 seconds if the drivers door is opened. If you don't open the driver's door this period is extended to 5 minutes.

If you only have one fob and the immobiliser re-arms during the battery change you have to go through the re-synchronisation rigmarole, which involves turning the key in the ignition numerous times and opening/closing the drivers door repeatedly.

Just for clarifications I found this in the td5 workshop guide... confused... 2032 or 3032? disconnect battery? really?

If either the remote handset battery or the vehicle battery is removed or disconnected, the rolling part the handset code is lost and the handset(s) need to be resynchronised to the anti-theft alarm ECU. The resynchronisation procedure is as follows:

• Disconnect the vehicle battery.
• Wait for 30 seconds for residual current to dissipate.
• Reconnect the vehicle battery.
• Carefully prise the remote handset apart and remove the battery. Avoid unnecessary handling of the battery.
• With the battery removed, press either the lock or unlock button several times to remove residual current from
the circuitry.
• Check the handset battery with a voltmeter. If the battery voltage is less than 2.7 volts, replace the battery.
• Ensure that the battery contact surfaces are clean and replace the battery in the handset clip with the + symbol
uppermost. Put the two halves of the handset case back together.
• DO NOT press any buttons.
• With the handset within range of the vehicle, press the lock button four times in quick succession. The
anti-theft alarm ECU will respond by locking the vehicle.
• Press the unlock button once to complete the resynchronisation procedure.

Just change the fob battery. Thats all I've ever done with no problems.
Once changed just press the lock button a few times until it flashes the indicators.

DO NOT disconnect the vehicle battery.
