I have a 2001 TD5. It always have sound like a wizzzz in the fuel pump (I suposse it has to see with high sulphur diesel in my country), and know it have 116.000 kms; a few days ago, I was doing off road when I get out of diesel. Since that day, the car have troubles starting in the morning (around 5°C) when it has less than a quarter of fuel in the tank. When it's warmed up, the problem disappears. Besides, I notice some delay in throttle response, it seems like throttle stays in low range stage. When less than a quarter is in the tank, it doesn't matter if it's hot, it shut's down sometimes, and is hard to startup, having to bleed every time. Also, there is a lot of white smoke when I floor down the throttle. Until know, I had:

Bleed completly fuel system
Get down tank, cleaning and doing maintenance to the pump
Verify fuel filter and lines, everything ok

I have read that there are some injectors seals that can be damaged. Can you please show me these? I also found that there are external pump solutions. Is there any information on this?. Somebody have done this in their cars? thanks a lot for your help.

I have to do anything I can before attempt to change the pump. We don't have it here in Colombia, if I want to import it, I have to wait around 6 weeks and the pump cost will be around EUR 1200.

Hi, The injectors have copper washers as seals at the bottom end. These leak and allow combustion gases to enter the fuel system.Replace them very carefully, the seats have to be clean and smooth.

Considering that the TD5 is riddled with computer parts, I would assume that when it ran out of fuel, it realised and then changed the fuel injection mode so that it is now running as if it's low on fuel or like it's still trying to prime the engine (Is that right?). I suppose in Colombia it's quite hard to find a land rover garage with a diagnostics kit is it?

You do know that the TD5 engine primes its self don't you?

Thanks for your replies. When you say bottom end it means the chamber side or the harness side? I don't understand prime, how can I get out of this mode without scanner? you're right, here is almost impossible to find a nanocom for diagnositc this engine (they don't have the connector). When I take out injectors how can I do to don't have to reprogram the ECU?

If it was running fine before you ran out of fuel its more than likely a problem in the fuel line, not specifically requiring you to remove the injectors at all (although that is a possibility). There's no way that they could have suddenly failed just like that, and it's purely bad luck if the washers have suddenly become ineffective!

When you say that you have been priming in the engine, how have you done it?

There's a technique such as putting the ignition on (but not starting the engine), and then pressing the accelerator almost fully 5 times, which should then be followed by a load of strange noises and the fuel system clears its self of any air and self primes.

Here you go, try this:
Keep calm.
Do you know how to do the fuel-air purge process?

If you have been operating the starter with your foot on the throttle you may have flooded the cylinders with fuel. But let's assume you haven't.

Turn the IGN key OFF.

Now do the following EXACTLY like this. Do nothing else but this.

Keep the driver's door open so you can hear the fuel pump start and stop.

IGN KEY to ON (but NOT starter). Leave IGN ON all the time now.
listen to pump running. wait for pump to stop.

press throttle pedal to the floor, and let it right up, and repeat FIVE times till pump starts again. wait till pump stops.

press throttle pedal to the floor, and let it right up, and repeat FIVE times till pump starts again. wait till pump stops.

Keep doing this until the sloshing noises reduce to sort of normal levels.

You may be there for half an hour .... be patient.

I have suffered this.

Read the owner's manual about injector priming too.

Let us know what happens.

that's the way I have been doing the purgue. The only way noise disappears is disconecting the green fuel filter conector (I think it's the HP stage line). You make me thinking about the injection mode change. How can I reset the mode?

I don't know that there actually is a mode because I am not familiar with the TD5 engine. There is however a "limp home" mode which kicks in if the wrong fuel is fed into the system or it's running extremely low I believe and it restricts the speed of the engine and the amount of fuel that it uses. I'd hang on a little and see if someone who knows more about that engine comes on to help!
