Hi

I have a Defender 90 TD5 (2002)
for the past couple of months I have had an intermittent problem.
When I try to start the beast I place my immobiliser fob on the contacts, the red LED goes off as normal but when I turn the key to the stage before firing the engine the only light to come on is the oil light and Handbreak - no other lights illuminate , also you dont hear the fuel pump kick in and the temp gauge goes all the way to the top .
Attempting to turn the engine wont start it (just turns, the same as with immobiliser enabled)
If I sit and wait with the key in this position for anything from 2 - 10 mins the fuel pump can then be heard to suddenly kick in and everythings OK (the temp guage goes back to where it should be and all relevant lights illuminate i.e engine management etc.) and the engine starts first turn.
I was told by a local landover dealer that the fault could lie with the main relay under the drivers seat - Which I replaced with a new one.
The intermitant problem has remained but is now getting worse in the last week the defender has died a couple of times while driving (and in real nasty, awkward places too ).
does anyone know if this is symptomatic of an immobiliser problem or perhaps an ECU issue ?

I have also been told that it could be a bad earth on the ECU.
Has anyone had a similar problem or can anyone point me in the right direction for a series of diagnostic test I can carry out to try to pin point the problem ?
Not sure where to look first.

Thanks

(sorry if I have posted this in the wrong forum. I've had a search on the other forums but cant find a similar issue)

Just been chatting to the local landrover garage and they say it sounds like the fuel pump :(

Any thoughts ?

Nice one Shifty ... Going to try that before I leave work tonight !
Died on me again this morning going down the motorway to work ... Not much fun freewheeling at 70 with no power steering or brake servo

Cheers M8
