sorted out the vibration problem. if you lift the bonnet just below the windsreen running the full width of the bonnet there is a small grill about one inch wide with a coarse sponge filter. every time i check the fluid levels i was pushing the sponge back in where it works out. it was exactly the same on my 300 tdi.about a 3 inch strip of the sponge had gone into the air vent and right inside the fan, very easy job to remove the fan. just drop down the cover below the glove box to get to it .you dont need to drop the glove box as it states in the haynes manual. i will replace the sponge wth a fine plastic mesh in case it happens again.
