Hi Guys,

I'm curious in general about how often the heads warp/crack on these engines, was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this?

I know what I'm about to mention is kinda likely to cause both of these (and maybe a head gasket), but you may also be able to shed some light on this too.

Was off roading this weekend and the temperature gauge stayed in the normal running conditions spot, dead centre. However... the coolant had drained dry at some point during the day and it went unnoticed. The only time it was noticed was when about to drive home, the heater was cold.

Found a small hole about 2mm in the radiator to oil cooler pipe (10P engine). Patched it up as best I could and filled it up to get it home. Main question is, how much damage do you guys think this is likely to have done driving in low box all day?

Doesn't seem to be down on power at all and doesn't seem to be smoking either, but only been able to check on idle so far (too dark at the moment).

Thanks,
Simon :)

Until you try it, there is no way to know. it will all be supposition.

Make sure you get it bled and see if it has a problem, lets face it you have nothing to lose if you take it step by step. Idle , check it, 1000RPM check it, etc let it get up to temp . and keep an eye on it. before you take it for a good hard run.

You never know you maybe also should buy a lottery ticket.......:)

Cheers

I can't tell you what or how much damage has been done, but one thing I can tell you for future reference is that the temperature gauge in the Disco 2 doesn't really tell you anything, it has just three indicating positions:
Cold, that's about right and too damned hot. The general consensus is that by the time it gets to the TDH position some damage might have been done.

lol, wouldn't know as the sensor was giving false information due to no water circulation and lack of being submerged too. So it was picking up radiant heat. Not sure if it overheated or not, but I sorted the leak today, no problems with water loss as of yet and no oil in the water either. No smoke at all (not even diesel smoke! lol) so I'll keep an eye on it for a while, but I think I may have gotten lucky.
