Hi
A freind of mine has a 2002 TD5 and has just been told that his head gasket has failed, the car still drives and he was not aware that he had a problem. they are telling him £1000 for a simple gasket, £2-3000 if the head is cracked and £5,000 for an engine, he is at his wits end, what do you think. we are in Essex, are there any decent independants in the south east. This was the main dealer.
Thanks
Robin

what makes them say his head gasket is gone? the cooling system on a td5 is completely different to most other vehicles. if there's overpressurisation of the pipes it could be down to a weak waterpump or sticking thermostat. Oil in the coolant could be due to a knackered oil cooler. diesel getting in the coolant could be a knackered fuel cooler. What are the symptoms?

sorry Ratty.
I just noticed your reply. I have not seen the car myself, and my freind is as he says 'not that good with engines'.
He took it to the main dealers for a service and told them that the fan has been running more than normal. most of the time in fact. he had not noticed anything else. The main dealer has told him that it is the head gasket, but could cost him a new engine.
I have had a hunt around on the net and the only thing that i can find is the plastic dowel problem, are there block problems.
The other worrying thing is that the main dealers have told him that if they replace the head gasket it may only last another year.... ?
I have read about the thermostat issues, but the main dealer should know about these?
With other cars i have owned i generally find that a decent honest independant offers great service and value for money, they also tend to know the cars inside out.
I have advised my friend to get it out of the main dealers and use my old 90 for now. If i can't find a good independant then i could do it my self. i would be happy to take it to one in another part of the country, but it would be better if local.
Sorry this reply is so long.

Help appreciated

Hi
here is the update, we took the car to the local garage, they tested the coolant for combustion gas, this came up clear. then they ran the engine to get it warm and took it for a long drive, no loss of coolant and no hard hoses. They told us to take the car away and use it, we are keeping an eye on the coolant level, it seems to be stable. I can't think why the main dealer said that the head gasket has failed. No doubt I will be posting tomorrow to tell you that all the coolant has blown out of the header tank.

Thanks for all your help, if things change i will post.

I don't want to put a downer on things but it could still be head gasket. Keep a close eye on the coolant levels and pressure. I did 3000 miles in my defender with the headgasket gone. It never actually overheated but it did overpressurise once in a while. I had 2 pressure tests and 3 sniff tests done. All came up clear. It's only cos I got fed up with not being able to trust it that I had it done. I am still flushing oil out the coolant system even now. It had settled down to nothing but it appears that as the temperature gets back to normal it is rinsing more oil out the coolant system.

Fingers crossed.:)

I've had a head gasket go on the TD5 and later a cracked head. I suspect the head was down to the dealer a) not diagnosing the hg failure first time it overheated and b) not doing a good job on the replacement (used plastic dowels). Unfortunately cracked heads are not uncommon on this engine, so it's a good idea to get head tested if you are replacing a gasket. Loss of coolant and white smoke in the exhaust are good indicators of a cracked head (but not always the case). Mine ran fine with a cracked head and only small coolant loss for a couple of thousand miles before I worked out for sure what was wrong.
One post asked about skimming the head. LR say you should NOT do this, as the head surface is specially hardened. If you DO do it you need to compensate by using a thicker gasket - sevaral thicknesses are available and the gasket has a thickness indicator which you must check on removal. Replace like with like, or thicker if you have skimmed.
