Hi,
i have a td5 auto on a 01.
the handbrake is getting really hot when iam driving it has always been like this, any suggestions?
could it be the shoes on the propshaft? that is the only thing i can think of.
the brake dosnt seem to be sticking.
thanks

What's getting hot, the handle? or the actual brakes. The rear brakes are also in use when you use the footbrake, are the fronts not hot also? Have yer got drums or disks on the back?

the actual handbrake is getting hot, very hot, the brake shoes work on the propshaft. The brakes arnt sticking/binding at all.

take it round the block then crawl underneath and spray some water on the drum or if you dare put your hand on it... if it's hot then the brakes are binding.

the handle should pull up about 4 clicks before the handbrake is engaged. when properly adjusted.

there is an adjuster bolt on the drum mechanisim underneath - use a 15mm or 17mm spanner (cant remeber size!)to back off the shoes a bit if needed.
also check that the handbrake cable is acutally releasing!

Best to get it sorted. We had a defender at work once with the handbrake adjusted up too tight and the heat seized the transfer box and dumped oil all over Croydon.
