When my td5 comes back to me i am going to be doing a lot of very heavy towing 3.5 tonnes easy up a very nasty hill and i find the low box gearing too high and the high box too high
Ive heard a lot of putting higher ratio but not lower

you have a choice of 1.6 pre turbo engines the lowest ratio,1.4 std defender ratio and 1.2 disco ratio

As an alternative, there's the 'underdrive', a device that bolts on the back of the transmission and gives you a choice of standard or reduced gearing. The advantage of this is that you can select normal ratios when there is no heavy load to shift, but once engaged it reduces all the gearing, so there's bound to be a gear you like for pulling away on hills or towing on the flat. Ashcrofts used to supply one, but I can't seem to find it on their website just now. They're quite pricey as I recall.

What motor have you got?
a 110 with 7.50 tyres you should have a 1.44 transfer box already.

I would say a 1.66 is good for heavy weights but you loose top end speed.

I used to tow big trailers on the farm with my 200tdi 110. Just changed to a 1.22 as not towing any more
Easy swap

So unless someone has changed the Transfer box it should be a 1.44

Options left would be a 1.66 you can get these gears & build a TB yourself.

You can go down a tyre size but looks crap.

I assume this should be low box too low. However the high and low ratio overlap the low 5th being a higher ratio the high first. Rather than changing the high ratio ratio which would compromise somewhere either low gear pull away or high gear top speed, I would practice double de-clutching and learn to smoothly change low to high on the move. Then you can pull away in low range (e.g. low 2/3) work up the low range box to low 5 and change to high 2 to then continue working up the box in high range. With a little practice is becomes very easy t get a smooth change between ranges on the way up and you can then keep your current setup.

Its going to be offroad most of its life so not an option really

Kwhen i change to low i stop before hill and put it in second usually or third with light load but with heavy load its first or it wont go
And this is up a road on the main snowdon path so its heaving with people and thick people driving cars with no clue how to reverse and when you start off on the hill theres no gear low enough

If low first is still too high I would be looking at the load you are trying to haul and suggest it is too heavy for the terrain, or you need a more specialised vehicle.
The low range gearing is the same on the different transfer boxes it is the high range gearing that differs, so changing the box will not solve this issue.

But smaller tyres would

as others have mentioned low is the same in all lt230s you can either drop down to 205 size tyres or change diff ratios, you have 3.54 you can choose 4.1 or 4.7,sounds like a tractor would be better

I have a sailsbury axle on the back is that same ratio
Good luck getting up with tractor as nobody moves out of the way or worse when people split to two sides of the road making it too narrow
