Hi. My 02 plate Defender Td5 110 with 45000 miles on started to die on hills today. Just took it out for a run and found the following:
Foot to the floor up hill she just about makes it.
If you are gentle with the throttle it will recover when the ground levels.
Cruises OK
If you keep foot to the floor when you get to the top of the hill it will die in about 10 seconds.
Really hard to start again if you let ir die. In fact.... after 30 mins of testing now won't.
Changed fuel filter and made no difference.
I am thinking lift pump?
Thoughts?

It doesn't have a lift pump.

It has a two stage fuel pump in the tank.

If the high pressure stage fails the symptoms are about what you describe.

First thing to check is that there is no OIL (like black engine oil) in the plug that connects to the ECU box fitted in front of the jack under the bonnet driver's side.

If there is oil there, clean it out using WD40 and an air spray, and clean the plug too. If that sorts it save up £40 for a new sub harness to the injectors.

If it doesn't, it could be a dodgy fuel pump.

Whatever.

um charlesY grandmothers and sucking eggs comes to mind but the deepender ECU is under the drivers seat aint it?

Yes it is, but the oil gets there just the same.

I mistook it for a Disco enquiry, having Discos on the brain right now.

While he's under the driver's seat he should find the main earth point there, clean it and tighten it.

not sure about lift pump if its fitted with filter, if its got a small screw in the center on top of pump the chances are its got a filter. if it as i wouldnt of thought this would be the problem unless you have been putting ****ty fuel in from a 5 gall drum

As regards any TD5, Deepender or Disco, I would really REALLY like someone to explain all that to me!
