So I think my Fuel Pressure Regulator is leaking due to the mess on the drive.

Would this impact the performance? I know the TD5 is not exactly quick but d its like driving a milk float....

Just wonder if I am looking at more than one job to do at the weekend.

Any ideas?

remove engine cover and see if fpr is leaking
low power disconect maf plug and c if it runs better then you know if maf is fooked
if not that check turbo hoses for cracks or delamination make shure waste gate is operaiting

If your FPR is leaking then you need to get it fixed whatever . There are some kits on ebay with gasket and 'o' rings but a lot of FPR's leak at the diaphragm so this kit would not help.

Thanks chaps for the advice

Er, daft questions

if I take off the maf plug and it runs better why do I need a maf plug in the 1st place?

How do you check if the waste gate is operating? Is that easy or do I need to take it to a garage?

dont run about too long with maf unpluged car runs on default values so if it runs smoother you know you have a maff problem
waste gate rod grip with pliers or vise grips and simply push it and make shure it all moves correctly give it a squirt of dw40 search utube and watch vid clip and you will c how its done turbo hoses remove and have a good look inside and out vac hoses go to wastegate follow them you will c where the 3 of them are they all come to and from the waste gate control unit thats if you are driving a disco td5 see how you go with this lot first then get more help if needed

Have you had this vehicle long and has it's performance recently decreased, or has it always been slow during your ownership?

About 8 months. Didn't drive it too much as I got it for the wife but have recently taken over and even then it is probably worse.

Why do you ask?

Re the MAF (Mass Air-Flow) sensor: if it runs better with the MAF disconnected it means the MAF is no longer working correctly. So by disconnecting it the ECU runs the engine on it's default fuel settings.

However with the MAF working correctly, the ECU receives accurate and current data which optimises performance. You need a working MAF.

I asked the question about historical performance to ascertain whether it was a fault that had recently occurred or a question of perception - it appears it's the former.

Things to check if performance goes off the boil:

1. Check/replace the air filter - diesel engines are VERY air hungry so for the cost of it, just replace it then you'll know it can't be that.

2. Do the MAF check thing. Replacements can be bought of Ebay from £30 - don't be put off by nay-sayers, I've bought 2 cheapies and they both worked fine.

3. Check for oil in the ECU red plug and socket. If there is oil here it means the injector harness oil seals have gone. A replacement harness costs about £30

4. Check/replace fuel filter.

A set(4 filters) of filters for the TD5 can be bought for about £25-30 from Paddocks or elsewhere.

Good luck

Dave

Thanks Dave for the suggestions. Didn't get time to look today but hopefully tomorrow I will be out the front to check whats going on (or not).

Cheers

Quick update. I checked the ECU plug and that was clear. Also tried running it without the MAF on it and couldn't notice any difference.

I did take the air box apart and the filter has had it so a new one is required.

Also found that there was a water leak in the front footwell under the mats.

Blocked air con pipe but all clear now.

Hi all. Sorry to hijack the thread. I have a mpg issue with my td5 where its using more fuel than it should. Less than 20mpg.
I figured if I remove the maf plug and notice a difference it could be a maf issue.
However on removing the maf plug I have noticed no difference whatsoever. So could it be that the maf hasn't been working for a long time? So could be over fuelling causing my rubbish mpg?
Is there any other way I can test the maf or the electronics to the maf?
Thanks guys!

You need a diagnostic terminal such as Hawkeye or nano to check the functioning of the MAF.

However if there is no change when you unplug it, it's not working and needs replacing.

Thanks for the reply. Had it connected to computer before and had a maf fault code. Cleared code. Drove for a week then took it back. No fault code. But getting real rubbish fuel economy. Car drives superb though.
Like I said when u disconnect while ticking over there is no change whatsoever. Have just drove about 20 mile and the car drives just as it has done for ages. So to me it seems faulty.
Looking on other forums people are saying contradicting things.
Some say if its ok there should be no change and others say what you are saying Dave

Re the effects of a faulty MAF - as I understand it, if the MAF is giving faulty or no signals then the ECU used a default setting to allow the engine to continue functioning.

It therefore follows (in my logic) that if the engine response doesn't change, the MAF is faulty and probably has been like that for a while.

As I may have said before I've bought several of the Ebay cheapies for various different TD5 engines and they all worked fine - around £30 apiece.

Hi Dave went to look at my maf sensor number today so I order the correct one and noticed a small black rubber hose that goes from the top of the intake pipe (engine side of the maf) to a small black box looks like a relay. The small plastic nipple ontop of the small box is broke and looks like someone tried to glue it back on at some point. Any ideas what this is and will it cause any trouble?
Thanks

Hello mate, I know the pipe you refer to but I can't remember what the 'black box' is.

I don't have a TD5 in the yard so I can't check and for some reason my copy of Rave doesn't seem to want to play.

Just hold on and I'll dig something out.
