just bought 2003 td5 disco auto 93000 miles after many years of wanting one,i knew the owner and all services been done

i was going up a moderate hill , cruse control on at about 75 mph, gradually lost drive power . the rev’s where climbing To about 4000 , when I managed to pull over . total distance 200 to 300 metres
On the hard shoulder I stopped turned of the engine, to let it cool before starting again for a minute, still no drive
Out side the car the back door an spare wheel where covered in oil
No visible oil in the front engine compartment . slight smell of burning oil , probably from oil on rear exhaust pipe
No warning lights came on at all

can anyone help with probable cause and what it might the damage be

I guess what you should have said is that you lost all your auto transmission fluid and then also drive from auto gearbox, the engine was still running OK.?

hi no one would guess im new to all this

i think it was all auto gearbox oil , though its hard to tell on a wet road
having checked the engine oil dip stick , the engine was still full
the engine still worked ok . but i havent driven it since

thanks to all for the info links etc
i must explain when mi disco decided to chuck out all ist auto gearbox oil
i was traveling through France
it is now i a french garage who have just sent me an estimate for 3500 euro
to replace the oil pipes and the gearbox .
in all the links i have seen on this subject no one said they had any damage to the auto gearbox . i would appreciate if anyone thinks a replacement gearbox would be needed

I'm not an expert on these but I do own a TD5 auto only recently purchased, and I also own a 300 tdi auto which has been splendid in all respects which is why I bought another auto. Did you not see from where the oil was being expelled as this would give some indication to the cause of the failure. i.e., from a cooler pipe, or from the rear oil seal or from the a joint gasket, not that you could have done much once your transmission was lost, unless of course you were able to replenish the lost oil. If it had been running on low oil then some mechanical damage would have ocurred usually in the form of seals in the valve block overheating and thus deforming or the linings drying out and collapsing / breaking up. I think that 3500 Euro (£2800 approx.) sounds a lot of money to me for an autobox including fitting especially as the warranty (if any) would be linked to a French garage, unless of course you live nearby. your profile does not state where you live but I am sure the same job, assuming a replacement box, in the uk would be less expensive plus of course a usable / valid warranty. I think you should weigh up the cost of the same repair in the UK plus of course repatriation costs, and make your decision then.

HIGHLY unlikely....... tell em to get the oil refilled and the filter changed and you'll be back on the road waving bye to them..........
