Yes I have, it was caused by the By Pass hose rubbing against the swage on the power steering hose. She dumped the coolant so quickly that there was no warning. The temperature guage sensor cannot read air temperature and so the guage continues to read normal. I didn't even smell it cooking.

So I would advise any Discovery II Td5 owner to have a look at their by-pass hose to make sure it isn't rubbing. My Discovery had done just over 160,000 kms.

anyone had/know of the oil pump failure thing - Bolt coming off or something?

yeh.. apparently LR ran out of locktite on some of the engine builds... or couldnt be f***ed?

it's the oil pump pulley bolt.. in the sump at the front of the engine.

apparently it comes loose then: no oil pressure... no lube, a couple of minutes later... no engine!!!

drop the sump, add locktite to the bolt, torque it up all will be fine.

so they say!

I recently had the engine out of my 01 Td5 to replace flywheel , clutch etc . The Disco had 176K on the clock and as I had to remove the sump to change oil seals I checked the bolt on the oil pump sprocket . There was no trace of any kind of locking agent and the bolt was not even very tight - but at least it had never come off .
So I gave it a dab of Loctite and put it back - having read many times of wrecked engines due to the bolt coming loose .
Apparently the sudden and complete loss of oil pressure meant that no engine which this happened to 'survived' - no matter how quick you reacted to oil light on .

Have no idea of what a garage would charge as I don't use them .
The removal of the sump is not too difficult and the fact that there is a sump gasket makes refitting a bit easier - unlike the 300 Tdi which has no sump gasket ; you have to use black silicone or similar and leave it to set for 24 hrs .
From articles I read the problem seems to have occurred mostly on the earlier Td5's e.g. 1999/2000. And I think it tended to happen sooner rather than later - I took that to mean that if for instance your Disco had 100K up then the bolt must have been threadlocked .
Some early Td5's also suffered from headgasket failure caused by the cylinder head being located by plastic dowels . After a while the dowels failed/melted and allowed the head to move and causing the HG to fail .

yeah i thought it was on earlier TD5's thats why i was concerned. Mine is a 99. It has done 99k though, i would just rather pay a few hundred notes for the bolt to be changed rather than a few grand for a new engine.

I will speak to my local indi, see what he thinks

cheers for info anyway
