I have a TD5 Disco with ACE that came in with a broken crank pulley/damper. It broke the 3 pedestals off the main part of the pulley so the balance weight came off and damaged the fan which went into the radiator, a big mess. I fitted a new pulley and within 30 km, the the 2 parts of the pulley had turned so the balance weight pedestals were touching the legs of the inner part of the pulley, making a vibration when you drive and especially when the engine is turned off. The owner said the vehicle also lost power and this is where the clue to the problem is, I think. The alternator, power steering pump, ACE pump, tensioner and aircon pump all turn freely by hand but that could not be the case when running at speed.

Has anyone else ever come across this problem and, if so, what was the cure.

have heard off the air con pump siezing but the belt should snap before it can pull the pulley apart, try running the engine from cold with no belt on but only for a short time as the water punp wont be working if its ok then suspect 1 of other components. did the engine overheat when the radiator failed as the td5 can go into limp mode when the ecu detects overheating and that could explain the loss off power, also was it a new damper and pulley you fitted or second hand

The pulley was a new one (Britpart). The broken one was unfortunately thrown away without having a good look to see if it was also twisted. The vehicle did not overheat because the owner switched off as soon as he heard all the noise and there was nothing that came up on Rovacom Pro. The company that imports these parts into South Africa said they had the same problem a few years ago and when they contacted the UK suppliers about the problem, they were told that the cause is the ACE pump partially siezing and causing too much drag on the belt but I find that difficult to believe as I have had Defenders where the idler pulley bearing has siezed so badly that it kills the engine and we have never had a problem with the pulley. Does anyone know how one can test the ACE pump on the vehicle.

Many thanks.

Marc.

I'm going to guess at the fault being due to the new pulley being Bripart. They aren't known by many on here as '****part' for nothing.
