Hi folks,

Finally got my hands on the 1999 TD5 that I am lining up to buy with a week to play and make a decision. Have yet to have a real good poke around but on a cursory inspection last night all looked in pretty good shape (thanks for the buyers guide note on here for stuff to look for).

Three specific questions that I have that I would be very grateful for views on are:

The 2 lumpy aluminium bits at the base of the windscreen (look a bit like hinges, but obviously aren't) have flaked paint and a pretty good coating of surface corrosion. There's no evidence of blistering on the screen surround itself. Is this something to worry about beyond sanding it back and touching up?

The chasis in general is in pretty good condition with no more than very light surface dulling in most places. However, the front drivers side suspension turret if that's the right word - the bit attached to the chasis that the top of the spring sits in, is more deeply rusted around its edge with some significant flaking. I don't think that this has spread to the structural body of this component, but obviously it will only take time. I will treat it, but if it does get worse how easy is this to fix?

Finally, given the decent state of the frame, what's everyone's views of waxoyling, and particularly that chappie who advertises in all the mags somewhere near rugby?

Thanks in advance.

Nathan

The dummy windscreen hinges are easily removed and rubbed back. They are made from an aluminium alloy so you will need a suitable primer before painting if you dont want the paint to flake off. Or as they are not that expensive you could always replace them with new which is what I did. £10 the pair from Dunsfold landrovers. I also used some clear silicone between them and the bulkhead so that no water could get between and start rusting. I cleaned and sprayed the old ones and sold them at an autojumble for almost what I paid for the new ones.

as shifty says about the hinges, the turrets are easy to change and cheap and as they would fail an MOT if they were realy rusty I would change them on both sides.
As for waxoiling the chassis (frame) it.s definately worth doing as it will prolong the life of the chassis but regular sprays of waxoil (or similar) in the most vunerable areas (rear cross member outriggers front legs behind the front bumper) and keeping the underneath clean will go a long way to keeping the rust away and a lot cheaper than advertisers offering this service.
