We are replacing thermostat on Disco2 TD5 and need to remove viscous fan. The official tools for this job(LRT-12-94 & 93) are £160inc Vat! Does anyone know a cheaper option to achieve our aim? Any practical suggestions much appreciated.

When i did my sons fan i just found an old large open ended spanner and attacked it with an angle grinder till it fitted , then as wammers says .... hit with a hammer

36mm a/f open ended spanner and a copper mallet to shock the nut undone as mentioned above.

A decent spanner is better that one of those laser-cut things.

It undoes in the direction of the fan rotation.

I use a old style pushbike head set spanner. about 5 quid.
last time I needed it off though I use a hammer and a bar and taped it on the corner of the flat and got it off.

Quick update. The spanner and backing spanner set arrived very quickly from Flatdog as recommended by Neilly. Husband has now replaced the thermostat and the sensor and the connecting pieces of tubing which connect the thermostat back into the cooling system. Sorry if that's not a very technical description:) Thanks again everyone:):)
