Hi there - am new to the forum and have specific query re my disco. It's a td5 10 years old with 78,0000 miles on the clock. It was Mot'd in March and passed with no advisor notices. Last week I took it to my local garage for a service - engine fine, but he was very concerned with corrosion along the brake pipes and severe corrosion on the back chassis esp near to where my tow bar fits and advised me not to tow my horses until it was sorted as it was an "accident waiting to happen". he went on to ask when it was mot'd and as it was quite recent, he suggested I contact vosa as he felt it shouldn't have passed. I advised him it was actuall the dealership who had passed it. when I looked at the mot cert they had contracted it out to a local garage. This garage looked at it and said they wouldn't have failed it but should have put an advisory so welded the chassis. I have been to my local garage today and he is saying welding not good and brakes still "f*****"! Soooo, I phoned the dealership who said it wasn't their "responsibility" as someone else had motd it= I was cross at this as it's their name on the invoice, so I took it back to mot place and they are still saying nothing's up with it but to bring it in and they will sort. my garage has phoned tonight and he's pleased they are looking into it but is very cross they weren't taking it seriously. My head is spinning with it all as I do not know who is right/wrong and am worried about towing in case something happens. I did say to mot place that I would get independent person to look at brake pipes which is when he said he would sort it "to keep me happy" so not sure if this is admission of guilt.

Any views/experience of this situation gratefully received. Also, my garage is saying chassiss in gen v corroded and should consider getting rid as it's going to start costing me - although I love the vehicel it has been quite an unlucky car - fuel pump went twice on it, ignition barrell went...........soooo do I bite the bullet and look at getting newer one.....or consider some of the foreign 4wd - I basically need it for towing. anyone know any good used 4wd dealers in notts/derbys/south yorks or specific land rover dealerships in same area which are good?

am at my wits end.........

the first of the d2 are starting to show signs of rust on the rear chassis mine looked real bad but after some wire brushing and scraping no holes were found and after a good tap round all is solid after a good coat of waxoyl all looks good i think it probly looks worse than it is and it could be a case of the other garage trying to get money out of you for work not needed mot inspectors have alot to loose if they pass a unroad worthy car and get found out but vosa wont do anything after 2 weeks of the mot

it would be a good ide to post where you are some local may come and have a look for you im in newark if that helps

for corrosion issues it's actually within 3 months of the MOT so I am still within the timescale to contact VOSA although I do not particularly want to go down this route if I can sort it out amicably.

think your wasting your time chasing people for things that might or might not have been done many moons ago

just find yourself a little local indi landy garage who can sort the problems - corroded brake lines aren't much of a bother - maybe a hours work to sort - chassis could just need a bit of patching

I've had three TD5's now and all have had some surface rust on the chassis.

When I do oil changes I keep the EP oil out of the tranny box and axles (so long as it doesn't look water contaminated) and I paint this on the chassis and all underbody components such as brake and ACE pipes.

It's free, takes no time to do, can be topped up when you are doing other jobs on the car and makes the underneath look a lot better. Can be cleaned off easily enough if you need to, as well.
There is a tiny amount of dripping (no more than Waxoyl) for a day or so.

Cheers
Dave
