My disco has been laid up for a couple of weeks. went to start it last week and the batt was nearly flat (starter just clicked away). Put it on charge last night, checked the batt voltage this morning and it was showing just over 12V. Went to start the car tonight, pump primed, turned key, engine managed half a turn then starter went click..click. checked batt voltage again and its showing 11v with ignition off and 7v with iginition on (dash lights fade away to nothing and fuel pump relay goes mad)

Sound like a dead battery?

Fully charge the battery and then take it down to your local garage. They can drop test it for you. It may be it' knackered. It may be that you didn't charge it enough. It'll need 12.5v to start. Don't forget your glow plugs will suck the initial power out too.

think i might just have get a new one. was on charge all last night and charger showed a full charge. Its the original LR one, so 9 years of service isnt bad! just could do without the expense!!

9 years is pretty good. I have had 2 other vehicles, where the batteries (not in my Landy) failed at 7 years. Replaced with Gel-based batteries. My Disco TD5 is now 7 years old, and I won't be suprised if it fails soon ish... Some of these very cold mornings (minus 16 c) we have had in nothern Scotland have taxed the battery hard...

Got a Varta with 830cca for £95 incl vat from a local motor factors. bit of a sod to fit as the base is slightly wider than the plastic battery tray. Fitted and all appears fine now
