Very irregular visitor here, so hello again....

2000 TD5 110 CSW 175k, driving round Reading Friday and suddenly horrible deep rumble/grind under power esp pulling from about 30 in 4th. Can drive past it in 3rd to 35+ then tease it in 4th through to little rumble above that.

Found that with transfer box in neutral and gearbox driven horrible bag of spanners noises - worst in 3 or 4, but all gears, engine speed not gear output speed related.

Guess that rules out props and diffs/cv's (put in a new LH cv few months ago but seems 100%.) - and transfer box too?

So, anyone else had this? thinking.... dual mass flywheel? clutch/ rod/release bearing/mechanism (had 2 rumbling sessions from that last few weeks but went away and very different to this new effort.)? gearbox bearings?

Has leaks from input seal and both outputs from TB, but had levels checked on way home and just a couple of squirts needed in gearbox.

Will have box off anyway so new clutch etc. on the cards whatever - any recommendations or stick with LR oe kit?

Had new clutch at 80k - not worn but spigot bush worn away to nothing in places - what the heck does a spigot bush do and could this be the culprit? and why would the previous one have chinks chewed out of it?

I'm guessing the friction plate will be similarly unworn (very light on clutch plates in this house), but all the operating mechanism needs doing while in there so bite the bullet and do the lot.....

Is the flywheel notorious - and do the symptoms tally at all anyway? Again - LR oe or someone else's?

Will get oil seals and release bearing done at same time, any other 'do it while its apart' items recommended?

Any hints/suggestions/recommendations gratefully received. Cheers, AA

Original flywheel; prob overlong interval since last box oil change (although level was pretty much on spec when checked when rumble set in...).

Interesting that front box bearing can be susceptible - maybe slightly low oil or even a bit crappy - we'll see what we find Weds. Thanks for the replies - couldn't log in earlier for some reason, but hope this works.

Any suggestions on what to renew/check while the box is off?

Any recommendations on clutch kits?

Cheers,A

Just in case anyone's interested..... workshop convinced its flywheel, parts on way now so should be fitted next week (I've told them not to hurry as luckily I have bike or daughters car to use..!).

I'd forgotten until a couple of days ago that the grumbling I'd had a few weeks earlier followed an uncharacteristic drag race start into some traffic (inc wheel spin !!) so I suppose that might have been the nail in the coffin if the DM springs were on their last legs....

Valeo clutch kit and flywheel, LR release arm spigot bush and various clips and slave cylinder while we are at it. Fingers crossed..... A

Well - parts eventually arrived (mix of Valeo and LR) after some delays elsewhere..... all fitted and running sweet as a nut!

Flywheel was apparently seized solid (the 2 halves) and off balance - guess a damper spring busted and jammed off centre. Whatever - it was the cause of the awful rumble/graunch.

New release arm, bearing and slave cylinder and I now have a clutch probably as light as the other half's Volvo. Well pleased - if a bit poorer - but good for another 100k now..... Cheers, A
