TD5 Auto gearbox

Hi, I had a td5 that played up after an oil change to the box, some say leave the oil box alone (do a search), my issue was the same as yours lack of power, and was sorted by not enough new oil being replaced by my inde garage, they failed to do the engine running and go through the gears as you fill procedure, once topped up it was fine.

i also tow a large c/van, you wont find a better car than a TD5, yes you feel a difference but with a change in driving style (and in my case a remap) you can take a 2 tonne van add another 6 tonne of kids toys, canoe, dog and family , read the road ahead, use the gears and take corners a little wider, jobs a goodun! Brilliant Car!

But mine had to go, with a wife nagging about costs of repair and the sheer size of it my needs changed and so an Audi Allroad is my chariot currently, caravan is next to go.

Thanks very much for your reply, i have me fingers crossed that thats all it is. As i say, without the van on the back it seems to drive perfect. I have it booked into a Land Rover specialist on Thursday for them to have a look see, so will keep this forum advised.
how did you change your driving style? did you have to drive it harder ie give it a lot more throttle going up hills and keep the revs up? or what? anything you can tell i would be grateful.

Could be any of the previously mentioned issues. Incorrect level, incorrect fluid, incorrect/substandard parts or incorrect fitting of the O-rings or filter.

If you don't feel confident doing it yourself, find a specialist who you can trust to do it properly, or even with you present.

I have no idea what made me take it to a local garage to have the box oil changed in the first place??????? must have had a brain lapse!!! lol

I know, some general garages are OK with Land Rovers but usually they have no idea.

I expect the fluid was low as it isn't easy to fill correctly as there is a procedure to follow to ensure the torque converter is full of fluid before checking the level, otherwise it is incorrect. The fluid is probably now contaminated so will need to be re-filled, but now the added complication is that the local garage may have fitted the incorrect part or fitted them incorrectly, so it isn't straight forward to the specialist now.

i have explained what problems i am having and they said they were gonna trouble shoot.
Whether they will do the test that Sierrafery mentioned in an earlier reply or what i dont know.
i have already made up my mind to request they carry out another Auto box oil and filter change anyway, as i am not confident at all that the original garage did it correctly. I just hope no damage has been done and that this is all the problem is.
Its just cost me £600 to have the fuel pump and fuel connector changed!!!!!!!!!!!!! 10 days before xmas too!!! bloody needed that eh! lol

Think ahead, laugh all the way up hills, over take at leisure when safe to do so.

With a 1.6 tonne van on the back you take care anyway, the standard car will always do the job but a remap... boy oh boy will transform your TD5 , more grunt (where you need it), long power range through all gears and guess what?,.....more mpg as well for £255!

quick update!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

took car to LR garage and after checking oil levels and general trouble shooting, hey could not find anything out of the ordinary, but suggested doing another oil and filter change just to rule it out. They did say that periodically they do get they odd 'dudd filter' and wonder if this was the issue?
anyway, they carried out the work and test drove it and said that all was well and it drove nice and like any good TD5 was supposed to.

So today i went to collect caravan, and hey presto, it towed realy well and better than ever. went up long drawn out hills without any worries and more importantly, no gearbox temp light came on!! job done.
