TD5 2nd gear crunch

Looking at buying a 66k miles 2002 td5 disco, took it for a drive and it crunched slightly going into 2nd a couple of times. I know these are a common fault, but is was it more to do with me not being used to it, i.e. even if i changed the syncro it would still do it?? Basically how bad is bad if you know what i mean?? Could i use it to haggle on price (independent dealer) or ask them to sort it it out, or will i be told "they all do that". Whats the cost for a garage to do the job?

If you already had the vehicle then I would suggest an oil change for the gearbox and see if that helped first off.

However, I would carry on looking, it's a buyers market out there at the moment and there are plenty of second hand TD5 Discoverys

Fair enough to keep looking, just wondered if i was going to find the same thing with most of them, i.e. is it me. And like i i say it only happened twice. This car is immaculate, 1 owner before being returned to LR main dealer as a part ex and then used by dealers owners daughter as a run about

If it's that good then go for it, but I'd use the crunch as a bargaining tool if you feel that there is an offer to be made

"is it me". The gearbox in a Discovery won't drive like a cars, so it is possible that you 'rushed' the gear change a little on those two occasions.

Seeing car again this week, and they are looking at my gaylander in part x, so there will be lots of areas for offers, but probably mainly on my side

Is that £ ? That's a lot of money for a 7yr old car.

What spec is it ES, GS, XS etc, does it has full and documented service history including receipts to show what was done (rubber stamps are cheap to buy, if you know what I mean)?

You should be able to buy something nice and workable for half that amount.

I've had a look around, and its seemed a decent price for a ES premium 7 seater, 60k miles, full history.

Drive a few more see if they all do it!

Sounds like you are rushing your gearchange, I did it when I first got mine in Feb, it never happens now though so was definitely me. Don't want to sound opinionated but I bought a 52 Td5 XS 100K FSH and all the reciepts to prove the thousands spent and even though it is mine I have to say it's in great nick. And the garage I use checked it out and agreed too. The price? £4800. Probably worth showing them some examples that you can find as proof of the market at the moment...although they will just take the difference out of the arse of your Gaylander!!!
