popped out to a wedding lady night and it's even worse, any under sort of load it either stuffed white smoke out the back or little slowed down so much I was having to go down to 1st gear up hills.

so far I have done the following:

replaced fuel pump/sender unit
replaced maf sensor
de egr kit
cleaned map sensor
cleaned ECU connector
replaced waste gate modulator
replaced Injector harness

any more ideas will be most welcome because it's starting to pee me off now

Two more cheep n easy to check

Clean the contacts on each ecu plug and check that the pins aren't loose ( :rolleyes: took me ages to find that one out)

Also depending on how much oil there was in the red plug you may find oil has got inside the ecu itself. :eek:

Open and clean carefully. If this has happened I'm not sure if its terminal. Fingers crossed for you.

Hi Mike, I feel your pain mate, I really do.

Have you checked for fuel leaks from the fuel pipes and FPR yet?

If there's nothing doing there, then maybe it's time to start doing checks for a blown head gasket?

I can't help feeling I've missed some stupidly obvious and cheap problem that will set you back on the road. I'll have a think.

Dave

check all the fuel lines and the FPR and all looks good.

topped the coolant up to the brim and got a mate to blip the throttle and there was no signs of bubbles.

what are the tell tale signs of the dreaded head gasket?

One or more of the following symptoms:

1. White exhaust smoke;

2. Bubbles in the header tank;

3. Hissing from the engine;

4. Mayonnaise in the oil filler cap or hear tank cap;

5. Loss of power;

A headgasket can blow in a number of different ways so it doesn't necessarily mean coolant will be involved.

just pulled the header tank cap off after a 10 mile drive and water ****ed out everywhere!

now it won't start, looks like a head gasket job.

great!

Hi Mike I'm sorry to hear that. I always try to see if it's the easy stuff first, but it is looking more and more likely that it's the head gasket.

However, before commiting to a replacement, you could have the exhaust gases checked for coolant and have the coolant checked for exhaust fumes.

Quick, easy and cheap job for any local garage.

Exhaust gases checked and its confirmed the head gasket needs replacing.

Its being collected on wednesday morning.

Having the head skimmed and tested whilst its apart, having the injector seals and o rings changed also.

Anything else you guys could recommend having done whilst its in bits?

Been quoted £580 for the job including the injectors and collection, seems a decent price and a very helpful guy.

Thanks for all your suggestions

Ask for hot crack test of head as they do crack heads and only show when hot

To be honest with you Mike that seems like a very reasonable price. Did they give you an itemised bill of what they would replace?

The only reason I'm asking is that to do the job 'properly' you need to get a full TD5 head gasket set which is not cheap. All gaskets should be changed, plus head bolts.

Here's an idea of the bits involved:

Turner Engineering TD5 Cylinder head fitting Kit

Change the rear camshaft seal whilst the head is off: http://www.turnerengineering.co.uk/acatalog/info-1101.html

The very best of luck to you,

just an update guys, job done, total bill came to £700 that included hot crack test and pressure test on fuel and oil.

left the garage and it seemed fine, just popped out again and it's totally gutless, first and second gear under 1500 revs are a joke, when it starts it idles weirdly, starts at 500, then jumps up to 600 and then jumps up again to 750, reversing up a hill or going up in first gear it just stalls unless I hammer the revs on first.

tried to call the garage back but they had closed for today, will have to ring them in the morning.

is this something anyone had known before that is a probable cause of the problem? soooo peeedd off!

cheers

Also replaced and done the following...

MAF Sensor replaced
MAP sensor cleaned
Fuel pump/Sender replaced
Wastegate modulator replaced
Wastegate free'd up
Injector harness replaced
Injector O rings and seals replaced
ECU connector cleaned and dried out
Removed EGR
And the Head Gasket replaced

Its in the garage I dropped it off last night so waiting to hear what they think.

any other ideas would be appreciated
