Low miles, sorted initial running issues and thousands of odd bits and bobs, the previous owner looks to have 'had a go' at everything, now running sweet as,but..the dial shows the engine to be running cold (1/3 across the dial)a new thermostat, new rad.full flush the system, and bled carefully, and everything looks sorted. I have noticed that the exploded diagrams I see of this model shows the thermostat laying flat long axis horizontal at the bottom left hand side beneath and behind the radiator, when viewed from the front of the vehicle where as mine is located in a vertical position to the right hand side and behind the radiator, could it be that the thermostat has been reinstalled in the wrong part of the system and is diverting the water to an incorrect section, would this explain the temperature issues,or are TD5 just rubbish at getting/keeping warm or am I overthinking this one?
Any help would be really welcome?

As far as I know all TD5's run pretty cool - mine has to be really working to get up to the half way mark....... Can't see any harm in it? Others may have a more expert view? Cheers, A

thermostat is sited correctly, new one might be poor lots of new parts are nowadys, all engines if cooling system isnt up to scratch will over heat and blow head gasket,if yours isnt check actual temp it might be a poor temp sender, and check thermostat is actually working ie one side should stay cold until engine is hot or both sides shouldnt be the same temp until engines hot

Td5 water temp gauges are not the best way to measure the temp. Ive always doubted mine as it gets up to just over a 1/3rd and stays there, despite being dunked in freezing cold water in winter when wading or being red hot with the fan on towing in the middle of summer.
Google it but I'm sure they read cold, normal or jump into the red if they over heat

TD5's have two stats as far as I know, they have a bypass system, I did post the TD5 cooling system diagram a while back. If you have a look through my posts you should be able to find the link to the diagrams and the diagnosis procedure.

Does your heater work? I mean really work? If it does then you have false information on the dash, if it doesnt you have an issue with the cooling system.
