Hi, my partners '52 TD4 has, i've just found out, been becoming more and more reluctant to start. Yesterday it started, we went out, parked up to get a xmas tree and now it won't start at all. The glow plug light comes on and then goes off after about 3 seconds. When cold it took a few seconds of turning over but then started. When the engine had warmed up it took considerably longer to start. Now it turns over but won't start at all. Any ideas would be appreciated. Is the fuel filter a possibility and would spraying some easy start at it prove or disprove anything. If so where do i spray it. when i turn the ignition on i can hear the pump in the rear wheel arch start to whirr. There is also what sounds like the noise of air escaping from the front left area of the engine which stops abruptly about the same time as the rear pump (about 30 seconds) Sorry, don't know much about all things mechanical. Looking at previous posts a leak off test would be a good place to start, how do i do one?. Also checking fuel pumps are running, where are they? Ta very much

I would start by checking your glow plugs for the cold starting and there is a flywheel/crank sensor that is prone to "going" causeing bad warm starting.

Check the earthstraps have a good connection.
Check the air filter is not clogged.
Low cylinder compressions would cause cold and hot starting problems.
You may be drawing air into the fuel line somewhere.
Don't use easystart, if you did you would spray it in the air intake, but don't do it as you may make any problems worse.

Thanks for the suggestions, I found the one about donating it worth serious consideration!!! I'ts just started after i turned the ignition on and off several times, leaving it in position 2 for about 5 seconds each time then it started straight away. Drove the car for 10 miles or so then switched it off. when i tried restarting it normally it cranked for about 3 seconds the fired up. Not cured the problem but at least we know it'll start. eventually. Am I right in thinking that as the problem seems to be worse when the engine is warm i can discount the glow plugs being at fault, or do they have some sort of effect even when the engine is being started when hot? What sort of price are we looking at for a crank sensor and is it as simple as the one i just had to replace on my own "car"?

A failing CAMshaft sensor will make hot starting difficult. Often when the sensor has had time to cool down the engine will then start. Some say spray it with freezer spray when you have a non start to prove the diagnosis.
