Hi I think my water pumps going, it started with a squeak, which I thought was just the belts, but now the squeak has been replaced with a clattering sound.

Ive been losing a bit of coolant for a while, had no idea where until now, where there seems to be a slight mist of steam visable on cold nights.

My prognosis water pump fooked!:boink:

Now the where`s/which/how questions

Wheres the best place to buy a water pump from and which are best?

Should I change the Thermostate while im knee deep in it?

I had the bmw one fitted with metel impeller not plastic like original .
Yes you should fit a new thermostat while it's out ( would be silly not to )
By all accounts it's a pig of a job to get at & that's why I had it done by someone that works on BMW's , It still cost a bit :(

Metal impellas? do you have the part number for the BMW parts? The bearing is going on mine, metal filings every where and clattering like mad, No idea what sort of impella is in there until I pull it out.

It does look tight in there, I suspect I will be pulling all sorts off just to get at it........but hey i like a challange.....I`ve dedicated 3 days to the job LOL!!!!!!

whats the going rate for a garage to do this job then? Might just be worth paying someone else for the agro..

On my 2000 td4 the original pump was leaking & bearings were rough , It had a black plastic impeller .
Looking on ebay most of the pattern water pumps have a metel impeller ?

Well it wasn't the water pump:confused:, the clattering is still there.....I hope its cured the disappearing coolant fault....there was some free play in the bearing but it still turned freely?.....It did seem to be leaking from that area though judging by patches of pink on the under tray.....we will see...

As for the the clattering, I think it could be the crank pully? There are still filings of metal being thrown around the belt area.....if its not that my crank shaft bearing must be fooked:thumbdown::thumbdown:

Will start a new thread on my suspected crank shaft pully woes:eek:
