I have read lots on this problem, but mine will not start at all - runs fine once started. Its a freelander, sport, 2005 TD4. Had the fuel pump replaced and no change. The car will not start at all, lots of white smoke, turns over OK, but does not fire up. Just need to know where to start (cheap fixes first). Thanks

or injector ..

but mine will not start at all - runs fine once started

so .. how do you get it started ?
easy start spray ? .. tow start ? ..
those could point to an injector

from link below:
" Usually a seal within an injector fails, allowing fuel to escape into the return pipe. This short circuits the rail pressure and prevents it reaching the 220bar required to activate the injectors at cranking speed. If the engine starts using Easy Start or a tow, then this can confirm injector leak back due to the higher engine speed generating enough pressure to overcome the leak. "

or ..

be other causes ..

have read thru this page ..

Thanks guys. I eventually got itt started after flattening the battery and then charging it for a couple of days. Its at the garage now but the mechanic hasn't solved the problem. I'm tempted with the rail pressure sensor fix (approx. £155 on ebay), but this is a lot of money if it doesn't work. The car runs fine once started

Why are you considering this? Is there a diagnostic code showing a fault with fuel pressure?

I think you're confusing the fuel pressure sensor with the upgraded wiring harness to it - its only a £35 part I think. No real indication this is your fault though, car runs fine just doesn't want to start - other higher likelyhood faults... as suggested.
