Hi, Not sure if this is normal or not but I have just bought a used 2004 Td4 SE Freelander and it's not starting on the first turn of the key.

As per the book I'm waiting for all the lights to go out when I first start it, it usually fires but then dies. It then takes 2-4 attempts before it fires again and after that everything is Ok and runs fine.

The glowplug light doesn't come on but I understand that the outside temp right now is probably too high.

Is this normal?
What could be the problem? (No warning lights on the dash)
If it's a known fault how do I check it?

Thanks for being patient as I know it's probably been asked already.

Cheers:D

Low pressure fuel pump at the rear of the car is a known problem for not starting, if this fails badly and causes a low fuel pressure usually a warning light will be on.
When you wait for all the lights to go out before you start, you should only have one amber light on, the one with a "!" should go out and stay out, the other amber light will extinguish when you start the engine.
Could be a crank sensor or cam sensor maybe, or more than likely a poor connection.
Check the wiring connection on the high pressure sensor on the fuel rail, this connection can cause problems too....give the contacts a good clean.

Hope you get it sorted...let us know how you get on
