Hi everyone, I'm a newbie here and would like to see if anyone has had the same problems as I've got with my 2001 TD4, When travelling at say 30mph in 4th and put the old foot down the engine starts to smoke(black) and is very lazy up until around 2500 rpm when obvoiusly the turbo spools up at this point the smoke disappears and the old girl truly flies. The car cruises on the m/way and will go well over 70 no probs. Have changed airfilter/oil filter valve press breather(on top of engine), MAF and run millers inj cleaner through it. New MAF did help and restored some performance, but it just seems that engine is either being fed too much fuel or not enough air until turbo spools up and forces air in. Any ideas plse as my independant thinks maybe turbo trouble, but has not yet plugged her into computer. Really need to sort this out as it's really annoying and am borrowing father in laws caravan for a weeks fishing later this year and don't think cars got the low down b***s to pull it. Begining to wish I'd kept my Disco 300Tdi:confused:

Had the same problem myself (after 100,000 miles). The giveaway is the smoke at low revs that dissapears as you put your foot down.
It will gradually get worse until eventually (and it took mine a month) the turbo will expire.
I managed to pick up a reconditioned unit for about £500 and had it fitted by APB trading in Hartlebury (Worcs.) who did a great job. Land Rover Hereford had quoted me over £2K to replace and i ended spending about £1200.

MINGE!

wun for yu!
reet . . .check yer input rubbers yer got two lhs un rhs as ya look in even the smallest hole will cause the problem that u say , also at the back of engine on the lhs as yer look in is a small filter in a clear plastic bowl attached to a tube [change it]. . .un best oh luck earthling. . . .:)

Thanks gents, will explore the hose aspect first much cheaper than the turbo !! if it's the turbo may well sell the damn thing. MING you seem a knowledgeable chap the hose on the picture is quite soft and pappy on my motor wondered if it's possible that it's collapsing under accel before turbo picks up and forces air through, ie less air more smoke type of thing ??
Tonyblack do you know what the fault was with your turbo as I understand it is possible to free up the variable nozzles but obviously can't do anything with the actual turbo vannes or compressor. Once again gents thanks for the info

its bin known fer these hoses to colapse ,but most common is for very small holes, its not hard to change em and fer peace of mind worth doing [ cheaper than a turbo]. . . .un dont fergit the small plastic filter lhs back of engine . . . .:)

Eyop Sheriff!

Just another thought . if yer hose are all squidgy you'll probly find there coatid wi oil, might be worth while to check the state of the erg valve , (the piccy i posted of the small right angled hose) S'only a couple of bolts holdin it on ,whip it off and give it a good clean up if its full o crap . then leave the thin vac tube off and stick a bolt in the end of the tube

Might help !

cheers gents, changed the hoses, cleaned egr and blocked off vac pipe no change. does anyone know if the boost press sensor can be tested also the solenoid operating the turbo nozzles, would really like to eliminate the little things before forking out for a turbo. For the MINGSTER that little clear plastic filter that dangles down at back of the maf you mentioned wots it 4 coz it looks like the old type of inline fuel filter from an old petrol engine ??
oh by the way is there anyway to test that the nozzles are movable like taking off the solenoid or summat wi out tekking the whole damn turbo off,

Might be worth unpluggin the MAF sensor connector and try driving. Mine was a bit like a dead dog at low revs until i replaced it, if it drives better low down unplugged then it's worth a go.

yup like iany sis thats ya next bit to check out ya maf. . .dissconection is the best test [went hurt it] just uses more fuel, the little filter thing you asked about is the main vacuum breather filter and if blocked can stop vacuum bits from operating correctly, and dunt fink it is mentioned much but can cause a lot of problems,,,,:)

Eyupp gents finally solved the problem, shot the fireman I found shovelling coal on the footplate nah decided to do a bot more exploring and found the vacuum pipe down to the turbo had been chaffing at the back of a clip fastener and until being disturbed had maintained a bit of a vacuum but when moved provided none at all, cut the pipe did a temp join and hey presto she flies like a jet and smokes less than me. Oh along the way for info found out that through a local indpdnt you can have the variable nozzle part of the turbo serviced and sorted for £211 much better than £599+ for the whole thing. Thanks for all the advice

EGR bypass pipe will be available from this chap soon. (Apparently a popular mod with Disco TD5 owners)

[email protected]

It just bolts on in place the the existing one and has a smooth bore so better for air flow and no more hot exhaust gas enters to cause clogging.
It releases a few more bhp as well. (a ZT owner has recorded 171bhp on his CDTi with one of these among several other mods and I can vouch for the improved breathing with one on my 75)

I will be posting some pics on my website when he sends me some.
