If mine makes a rattle or pinking sound I do this.
On fill up, 500ml of mineral 2 stroke, double shot of Miller's ecomax, and good quality diesel, I use Texaco religiously.
Be warned, you'll only get 300 miles to the tank of fuel!

Then use 200ml of 2 stroke on every fill up. Miller's is a personal choice.

I normally only have to do the big treatment once a year. Usually after winter. Other than that, for an old diesel, it's quiet and smooth running.

Ok thank you Mike for that advice. And yep Ineed to check what I'm wrighting. As Im carp at spelling sorry about that guys

that rattle or pinking sound be just a mild version of diesel clatter / knock
mostly heard from pre-common rail types

to reduce that 'clatter' in c.m. types .. combustion chambers were redesigned
and 'injection' be determined by the engine management computer

a poor spray pattern from the injector nozzle ..
or a miss timed injector pulse ..
would increase the potential for more 'clatter' ..

the td4 .. and other c.m diesels ..
use a couple of injection pulses per cycle ..
if one is slightly miss timed .. maybe due to residue inside the fuel passages
then there's another setup to produce that tinkling > clatter noise

see paragraph starting " The fifth requirement of a modern diesel is pilot injection. "

( g.search : https://www.google.co.uk/?gws_rd=ssl#q=Diesel+Knock-The+quiet+diesel+evolution )

add the potential to fill up with crap fuel ..
one that don't combust as it should ..
more potential for diesel knock

Ok thank you hd3 for your advice

Hi i have the same problem. My freelander is picking at 1.5rpm i have checked wires.injectors.and filler cap.i can not find anything wrong? Could the in line fuel filter course this .as I carnt thing of what else it could be ???
Hi , It was the injectors causing the 'coughing/spluttering/popping/bang/misfire' on mine. In the end I took it to local Diesel engine specialist and they diagnosed all four injectors needed replacing. It now runs fine. Only thing I would add is I had to disconnect the tuning box I fitted so they could accurately find and diagnose what was wrong. Im not going to fit it back , its running fine and that all that matters , just leave it alone now...
