TD4 Rough Running

kellyt, your td4 rough running is most likely a dirty injector, you can prove this by running the engine at tickover and unplugging the injectors each in turn, the one that has little effect is the one with the problem, its easy to check,
how to solve the problem is not so easy, injector cleaner has worked for me in the past, injector removel can be quite difficult without the correct equipment ,so deffenatly worth trying a few doses of cleaner and try some bp ultima
good luck

I have tried that and it runs worse with each injector unplugged in turn, I have also tried different injector cleaners over the past few months and it has improved the situation quite a lot (I have just bought my 5th bottle to try STP). The injector wiring loom has been replaced by the garage I bought the Freelander from, I cannot go back to them as they cured the problem for a while and although the problem has returned the guarantee is out.
I am also running on BP Ultima diesel.

do you change "surpression" valve filter symptomatic of blue smoke.

do you try to close with metal piece exhaust arrival to egr to make a test? sometimes egr fail and keep little open all the time.

sometime egr has so much soiled intake manifold that the engine works as a poorly pb of injector.
It is necessary to disassemble intake manifold and clean it

Thanks kergoat,

yes I have changed the depression filter and valve and I have cleaned and disconnected the egr, I have just checked the injectors and all four is leaking on the return side so I think I have found the problem.

how do you bypass egr ?
only remove command or remove egr and put an egr bypass ?

thanks

it's happened to a fench friend he had cleaned egr valve always seemed to be correct with eye but there was a leak!

bye

All sorted and going better than ever, took it to dealers and put it on laptop and they diagnosed a problem with No3 injector, put in a new a bosch one and now it runs perfectly, cost 200 quid though, thanks everyone for all your help.

hi
i have a similar problem, it was a nightmare to start with the white smoke, so i changed all filters and oil but the problem persisted, took it to the local garage and they did a diagnostics check and found a faulty mass flow filter and faulty injector , had both of these replaced and in the last few days its been struggling to start .It starts but then cuts out an it wont let me rev it there is no response at all. after constantly trying to start it starts !!

Any ideas folks as i have just had our first child so cant afford to keep throwing money at the car , by the way its a 2003 td4 facelift model.

If the garage diagnosed and replaced items can't you pop it back to them? They may have not done the job properly or left a connector off - one that could be off is the camshaft sensor or the one that fits underneath the Intercooler box.

Hi guys, thanks for the response. When it eventually starts there is no more White smoke.but it still runs lumpy on tickover . I am taking back to the garage who have said it's a possible injector again !! I find this hard to believe as it's different fault symptoms and the car hasn't been used since the last one was replaced .
To be honest i don't have 100% confidence in the garage so I'm not expectng much help from them.

I was chasing similar problems - changed an injector and most other things then realised it actually two injectors that we're gone but seemed to affect differing rev ranges.

A leak back test gave me the answers that and a few injector swop arounds. I do my own stuff so it is cheap to diagnose but I had to make a kit to do the Leakback

hi guys

As expected picked up the car from the garage who have told me " they cant see anything wrong with her "except she may of been run on tractor diesel by the previous owner ( farmer).
so its back to the drawing board !
just to recap it starts first time but ticks over lumpy on low rpm approx 500 rpm then cuts out i am also unable to rev the engine as it has no response! . After several attempts it turns over and rises to 1000 rpm and runs . whilst it is running it still ticks over very lumpy .
I have also been i
As a owner 2 previous freelanders and 1 rangerover i have never come across this issue before.

Morning Angeloc, reviving an old thread here...I'm chasing similar issues, trying to avoid paying for new injectors unless these are most likely the culprit. I like your leakback test above! I've taken mine to an independent, who I think is a reliable Landy shop, used many years. They say they tested the injectors and saw no leakback...but after replacing literally everything I can think of, I'm not sure what else it could be. I don't mind buying all 4, if one or two have gone I'm sure the rest are on their way and I'd rather not have my wife stranded somewhere. The last two things on my list prior to injectors are the MAF and I was reading about the boost solenoid although I'm not sure that affects initial starting/rough idle as much as high-throttle cutouts. Any thoughts appreciated!

Hi Angeloc hasn't been on since November 2015, so may not read this any time soon.
If you are getting pore running at idle and low revs. I would put a couple of doses of a decent fuel system cleaner in the tank and run it through.
Additionally try to avoid cheap fuel, like supermarket stuff. This is often pore quality, to which the TD4 is particularly sensitive.
