Howdy all,

My 52 plate TD4 has developed a knock from the rear when accelerating/changing gear so I've had it up to look for the cause.....

Jacked the rear wheels up one at a time. N/S seemed okay, a little wear in the CV joints but not to bad. Prop Shaft was rocking when I moved the wheel.

Switched to o/s rear and there seemed a lot of play. Was rocking the wheel forward and back and the d/s shaft was barely moving, although the tyre was.

Ah hah I thought, the outer CV is knackered.

Disconnected the arms and pulled out the d/s, but there really doesn't seem to be too much wear, and if anything it was the inner CV going into the diff that had a bit of play, but nothing warranting replacement, odd I thought but perhaps better fitting a new driveshaft anyway.

Looked into getting an aftermarket d/s, but you can't get them for late 52's onwards only genuine parts and I have rung around everywhere Paddocks is quoting just the outer CV joint at £150+ VAT!!!!!

Soo before I fit anything it's going back together for another inspection. I would however be grateful of peoples thoughts and opinions please.

I'm thinking that it might still be the outer CV joint. In which case does anyone know if an older drive shaft will fit. If it was only 6 months older the full drive shaft with both CV is £88+vat as opposed to £250 that has been quoted for the correct and genuine part.

I don't think its the wheel bearing as there is no side to play

I suppose there could be excessive wear on the spline.

Orrrr I could be completely wrong and its a diff/vcu issue, (I don't think so, and hope not)

Like I said any comments would be much appreciated.

Hi Vstar,
Sounds like it could be the rear diff mounts to me

Possibly, they're quite cheap and a relatively easy job so I might try a set before I invest in a genuine driveshaft. There did seem like a lot of play in the hub though.....

Rear diff. front mount is easy to change and relatively cheap. (You dont need to disconnect the propshaft to change it).
Remove the center bolts from the two rear mounts and push the diff. over to remove the front mounting.
