TD4 Radiator Top Hose Removal

Hi Guys,
Im about to fit the Renualt inline thermostat to my 2004 TD4. In the how to guide I keep getting pointed to it states, that I need to cut off the metal band that holds the top pipe on at the engine side. Is this really the case or has someone managed to remove this properly? It looks like a bugger to get into to cut off.

Nope, it has to be cut off- no other way. Use a dremel type thing with a grinding/cutting wheel and it's easy. You can get almost all the way through and then use wirecutters as I did. Just feather it with the cutter until through. Sounds harder than it is really...

Cheers SpaceMonkey, It will be after xmas now before I tackle it. I cant even see the metal band let alone cut it, can see me loosing a finger or 2 doing it lol

You won't see the band until you've removed the intake manifold, I'm afraid ! But go ahead, it's still an easy and worthwhile job to do. Did mine a couple of weeks ago - and it looks as if I might be looking at an MPG improvement as well as better heater !!

Its better MPG I'm looking for. Coolant temp at the mo only reaches around 65°C and I think the FBH is on 100% of the time in winter (its still on after a good hours run). I have already done the EGR bypass and crankcase breather BMW mod next step is the thermostat then I'm gonna get a synergy, and hopefully my MPG will be better than the 30ish I'm getting at the mo.

The FBH will turn off when the water temp gets over a certain threshold, can't remember what it is though. That will help with mpg.
