Td4 oils schedule

Hi guys,

Ive always looked after my own servicing and after upgrading to a 4x4 am preparing to do a full service.

I'm intending to change the engine oil, filter etc but have noticed on a few forums and sites that they mention replacing diff oils etc.

With the td4 freelander what oils should I replace, I know the engine oil obviously but what other ones are there I need to change.

they only mention top ups in the schedule, so if you're really worried just do them.

LR give service intervals for the engine oil-change and gear-box oil-change only.

They only ever say to check/top up the IRD and the rear diff.

That's not my idea of good practice so I change them all.

The IRD is easy, but make sure you can open the filler/level plug before you actually drain the old oil out!

The rear diff has no drain plug , but you can get most of the oil out with a cheapy syringe filler, which you need anyway to refill the IRD.

Do you have a manual with all the oil spec and quantities?

What Ian J has just given you is correct - but its all on page 239 of the owners manual.

If you haven't got a manual you can get one on-line at Topix.

If you register on Topix - it's free - you will get loads of info on your vehicle when you input the VIN number. Some stuff is subscription but all manuals and leaflets are FREE. I like 'free' - I'm an Aberdonian.

Hi, can someone post the link to the service schedule again as I can't get it to work.

I removed the rear diff cover on my FL 1, TD4 to drain the oil fully and took the opportunity to give the casing a good clean out.
Make sure the cover and mating surfaces are oil free by cleaning with white spirit or other solvent before applying a small bead of RTV sealant and bolting up.

Can you use something that's safe to flush all the oil and crap out of the diff? Some kind of solvent that leaves no residue once dried but won't harm anything, or is there no point? I've only ever drained and filled before, but just wondering?

I removed the rear cover on mine shortly after taking the car for a run. The old oil was not too dirty and there were no "Silvery" deposits in it. I just soaked a rag in white spirit and gave the inside a good wipe over where I could reach. Finished off with a clean dry cloth.
At least removing the rear cover gets all the old oil out and gives a chance of having a look inside. I was contemplating drilling and tapping a drain plug hole in the bottom of the "Banjo" casing, but was pushed for time. It's now on the "To do" list but no rush as the diff oil isn't something you do at every service !!!

just wondering if another diff cover with the drain plug in would fit ? any body know?
