Hi all, my 2004 hse auto freelander developed a fault today while driving home it lost power and started juddering, when i pulled over it was idling fine but when i revved it there was quite a bit of blue smoke and the engine was running rough/missing. I limped the rest of the way home. At the time i assumed it was the fuel filter. After being switched off for about 15 mins i started it again and it ran fine and revved up without any issues i haven't test driven it since but i plan to change the filter tomorrow anyway. Ive done a quick search online and i am now convinced that everything is wrong with my freelander!!!!

I hope it is the filter but has anyone else had any first hand experience or symptoms like these and managed to sort it?

btw it has one of those bluespark performance chip thingys on it if that makes any difference!!

i dont no much about diesel engines to be honest

but if it was a petrol i would say either oil stem seals or piston rings
 
Or better yet, get the BMW cyclone type filter which is a direct swap and no more worries about blocked filters. Loads of info on here about it.
 
Thanks for the info ill get the crank case filter done soon as!!! the mrs been driving the freelander today and she said that it lost power on her again on the way to work, but then on the drive home after being left all day it ran fine????!!! could this be something to do with electrics after all this rain weve been having? anyone seen or heard of any issue like this??
 
Bit obvious, but have you checked the turbo to intercooler hoses? There could be a split in one of them. The 90 degree one went on mine. I replaced them all.
 
Just a thought is the fuel lift pump making any strange sounds only it sounds just like what happened to mine bloody car let me down eventually when the pump completely packed up cost me a tow home and a lot of ribbing from the misses and brothers.
 
ive done all the checks everyone suggested! Yesterday I had a call from the mrs saying the freelander had stopped again and the engine management light had come on after she drove through a big puddle! after switching off and trying to restart it started fine and ran perfectly! I haven't had a chance to investigate much more but i did notice that it looks like there is a cover missing inside the top of the passenger side wheel-arch? is there ment to be hole here or am i missing a cover?? could this be the cause of my symptoms??
 
Was it definitely blue smoke?

Loss of power. Lumpy running and white smoke could be an injector fault.

Simply put
Blue smoke is oil being burnt.... Wouldn't be an electrical problem causing this
White is unburnt diesel ... Injectors, timing or lack of compression
Black is Diesel not fully burnt.... Overfueling or under breathing, (fuel air mixture too rich)

thanks zdomz, The blue smoke issue seems to have gone away! the issue now is that it cuts out and engine management light is illuminated, would plugging it into a code reader be of any help as i assume if the engine management light comes on then there will be a fault logged in the ecu? are any of the cheap code readers on ebay any good?
 
If the management light is on there will be a fault code to read. The fleabay code readers are usually just generic EOBD readers which are ok to a point..... They will only give basic generic information.

But a lot of smaller garages only have EOBD capability. These readers will only give engine faults not anything else. Most diagnostics are a case of you get what you pay for.....

I only have an EOBD reader and get on with it quite well but it does have its limitations. If your posckets are deep get a dedicated reader. Or someone near you may have one....
 
update! let the mrs take the defender today so i could have a go in the freelander to see if i could experience the issue first hand! After driving for around 10mins the engine management light came on and engine lost power(i assume limp mode!) i switched off them restarted was fine for about 20 seconds then the issue came straight back.

called into my local garage who plugged it in for me and it came up with p1190 fuel pressure plausibility, at least i know know where to start looking! he must have felt sorry for me as he didnt charge :)

ive done a quick google search and that has thrown up several possibilities so will try to narrow the search down tomorrow!
 
Car had been fine for over a week after i tried some injector cleaner in her, however on a longer journey 15mins + the problem has now returned :-( where would be the best place to start looking to resolve this p1190 fuel pressure plausibility problem? how can i test the fuel rail pressure sensor? thanks
