the oil is every where else other than the engine so could not return back down

true about sensers as long as oil is being pumped around the light stays off

aa contractor advised if it did start id need the engine checking

yup my Scenic had one - probably one of the singularly most unreliable cars I have had the misfortune to own - it went through a gearbox every year (I gave up after 3!!) the engine seized at 18k miles (electronic dipstick /engine management lights / oil pressure guage were useless in that instance) I could go on but this is a LR Forum - lets just say that (IMHO) leccy dipsticks are as prone to failure as any other bit of kit on a car - your oil level & the visual check they allow are pretty important -maybe why the electromic ones haven taken on???

m5 and the porkers £££££
done quite alot of miles in pug and realy happy with all 3 ive had all 3 derv 1.9 to approx 200k between them had 2 renault vans back and forward to the garrage after 9 months old

I agree entirely, but it is the only way to check the oil level whilst driving - the problem described at the beginning is catastrophic exiting of the oil thro the dipstick hole because of crankcase pressure.

kit - if I started about my old Renault I would end up sounding like that mad hat chap fella - I decided to finance it with one of them FULL maintenance package jobs (like tyres and everything included) the chap at my local Renault dealer (almost proudly) informed me that I had spent more than the brand new value of the car after 18 months!!

front suspension collapsed
glass roof motor failed twice - 2xnew glass roof & headlining
auto box failure x 3
engine seizure - new lump
front and rear brake caliper failure (front failed x4!!)
automatic handbrake failed
electronic fault caused minor fire in engine bay (thank heavens for fire extinguishers!) new part wiring loom

the list goes on and on - the strange thing is that I sold the car with a full list of the work that had been done on it and the guy reckons it hasn't missed a beat in 12 months!! maybe I am lacking in mechanical sympathy!

god that is bad my vans were lease vans 2 gearboxes in 18months engine misfires and stoping with no warning at 70/90mph on motorway twice aa turned up put key in started <what a prat i felt> if they were british they would be called friday cars???

Just to update you guys on the Td4 -I changed the big ends as some were worn but still had a knock so decided to take the head off and what a pig of a job that turned out to be .
As said here they certainly set out to make life as difficult as possible for guys doing their own repairs . I have managed to build up a good kit of tools over the years but still ran into problem after problem and it took me 2 evenings to just get the head off as I had to come up with ideas to get around using special tools.
And to make matters worse the Haynes manual forgot to mention that there are 5 ( not 4 ) allen headed screws attaching the head to the timing cover - one of them hidden under a chain guide . This held me up for ages as the head wouldn't(couldn't) come off .I thought it was stuck on a dowel and the result was that I cracked the timing cover .
The end result is the engine is to be scrapped - as Clutchdust said early on no 1 cylinder is badly scored , some of the cam rollers are rough and both camshafts are looking the worse for wear.
I rang an engine reconditioner about doing it up and his reply was " you could spend a few grand on it " so the search is on for a SH engine - and I am not looking forward to fitting it .The engine and box have to come out as a unit and this means removing driveshafts (which can be very reluctant to pop out) , loosening ball joints and a whole list of other bits .
If I can get this one back on the road I will never go near one again.

hers something worth looking it - it gives oil level and TEMPERATURE. Unfortunately its for a Harley Davidson, but it shows what can be done....

come on yu electronic geniuses out there - you have a ready market in this forum!!! :D

For those without a TD4 certain parameters need to be known....
a) internal diameter of dipstick tube (cos its gotta fit inside it!)
b) distance from top of dipstick tube to "Full" position (this shd be able to be measured on the dipstick itself)
c) distance from top of dipstick tube to "Empty" position

well mine is in the garrage they havent done alot since they had it monday its going to be an engine swap but as of friday an engine hadnt been orderd i will admit one thing my local garrage will not buy rubbish used one for me and has made 30/40 phone calls to his trade supplyers etc and will do the job correctly so i cant realy complain if i had the time i would do it myself as i have use of a workshop and have built a kit car and have lots of tools but work and other comitments mean i can't

I have got a replacement engine ( from an 06 with only 9K mls) and even though I have a 2 post lift and a good tool kit (and will probably have to hire an engine crane ) its going to be one pig of a job as you have to remove front drshafts and of course dismantle the front suspension etc. One thing that has really bugged me is that hoses for water etc. are so hard to move - you know that with hoses once you break the grip on one small part they will twist off , but not the Freelander . They must have glued them on .
I also found a pipe with a hole worn in it and another one almost cut through - and I had a lot of dismantling done when I found them .
So you wouldn't have much chance of finding them during a 'normal' search.
I expect to be back here for help when I start putting things back together.

Galway , in the west of Ireland - don't think any forum mbrs in this neck of the woods , but thanks for the suggestion .
Will have to struggle on alone - and hope for the best.
