Hi just bought 2004 td4 freelander half way home 200kms knocking noise has started in the front.I'm sure it sounds like cv joints is this a problem in this model as we bought the car for my wife to drive around in the bush where we live. Cheers Rob M

Cv's usually get noisier over time and are first noticed in tight turns. Since your noise only started halfway home and presumably started fairly quickly maybe there's something coming loose? Has there been any work done on it prior to collection?
To my knowledge Cv joints aren't particularly a problem, what mileage has it done?

Check the front anto roll bar drop links- they are located behind the shock absorber and have ball joints at either end. This is a common fault. If you look at the condition of the gaiters on the link it will give you a clue as to their condition.
Jacking up the vehicle and removing the wheel will take the play out of the link, so any play will not be obvious. Best way is to get it on ramps and use a bar under the anti roll bar and push up. If the drop links are suspect than you should hear a metallic 'clunk'.

Hello, more investigation found that when engine idling sounds ok then rev gently ok till 1800rpm then sounds like turbo kicking in emits black smoke and knocking noise..
Sounds like it could be dodgy injector/s or even thinking maybe a blocked engine breather.
Simple test for a blocked breather is to unplug the dipstick with engine running, oil pumping up dipstick tube indicates new breather filter required. Be warned oil ****es out if there is a breather problem so be ready to switch off quickly!
Also scan for fault codes..

Fuel filter in RH rear wheel arch and strainer in tank. Engine breather in housing on top of cam cover. Use the forum search facility, loads of threads on these and black smoke issues.
