My Wife just had to call out RAC to get home from Tesco's after our freelander TD4 2003 "03" died on the roundabout, it lost all power then cut out. it would not start again. after a 40 min wait for RAC to turn up he tried to start it and after a few attempts it started but had no power and was spluttering then cut out again, in the end it was towed home and when it was back home i tried to start it and it started first time then ran for about 5 mins while stationary and then started to splutter again.

the car does have a senergy2 tuning module and Pierburgh MAF sensor it has a full service history and was serviced no more than 2000 miles ago. also replaced the intercooler hoses a month ago. it has been running perfectly up till now!

im thinking a possible fuel pump issue?

any advice on things i can test as i dont fancy taking it to a dealers to get robbed blind!

Cheers

"LP pump" meaning fuel pump in the tank? how do i know if my freelander has a pump in the tank or by the rear wheel arch as i have read up they have two types??

just noticed your location is chippenham, im only in melksham! small world.

And I work in Melksham. Small world indeed. LandyBird is in Melksham too. I can recommend Joyces in Trowbridge, next to Tesco, if you get stuck. They know their stuff there and the rates aren't too bad.

To answer your question. It should be in the tank for your 03. After 03 it moved out out the wheel arch. To get to it you have to remove the fuel sender unit from the tank first. This is accessed through the boot floor.

Would be a good idea to get the fault codes out of the ECU first. A low fuel pressure alarm will point to this issue. The high pressure fuel pump, which is mounted on the engine is also known to fail so don't take it as red that the LP pump is the problem, its where my money is as I said.

how funny tesco's in trowbridge is where it broke down!

when it cut out it had the engine light, oil light and battery light on and this stayed on but then when out when the car was towed home.

the RAC chap plugged his laptop in and it would not give out any fault even though the engine light was on at the time!

Well, the first thing to try is this. Switch on the ignition and listen for the tank fuel pump spinning up for a few seconds to get the pressure up. If nothing is heard then this is the place to start looking.

As for the fault codes, if the lights on theres a fault. LRs diagnostics are a little different to most so its possible RAC Bob didn't have the right kit.

I think your pump will be under the right rear wheelarch, you should still here it running inside the car though when the ignition is first turned on.

They don't usually fail without warning.

If it's OK then check all the sensor connections on the engine.

Take off the synergy, I had the same a few weeks ago, thought it was the fuel pump, got towed to mike aitken 4x4 in fife and they disconnected the synergy and started and is still going fine now.

Must get round to sending the synergry back!

Steve

I think i have found the problem. I have checked the fuel pump and can hear it working when i turn on the ignition.

I removed the Pierburgh MAF and replaced it with the original BOSCH one. I then removed the synergy tuning box and plugged it all back in as it would be normally.

I Left the car running for 30 Min's on the drive and then drove it for a 5 min test drive, all seems OK.

do you think the MAF was causing the issue or can the fuel pump be intermittent?

just saw your post as i submitted mine!

will be sending mine back too, the tuning box has caused nothing but black smoke and problems since it has been on for the last year. i should have guessed it would have been that that caused the problem!

my car broke down then started ran perfect for a week then broke down again landrover road services sorted it the fuel pump had went he says thats what happens when it is about to go and you only get about 4 years out of them

Just make sure it wasn't a bad connection or wiring damaged, could even be worth reconnecting it to prove beyond doubt.

A point that may be of interest to you guys is that I have plugged my diagnostic into freelanders a couple of times and have had no faults showing on the manufacturer specific software. If I then change to EOBD it does show up faults. It may be worth asking whoever attends to try EOBD aswell as manufacturer specific software. I know the RAC can do this, I don't know if the AA can or not.

Edited after reading page 2 LOL.

There is a Landrover mechanic down Snarleton Lane in Melksham too, they do a lot of Army LR's. Quite switched on and sorted out my Disco out, though I have yet to take my FL there. Go two thirds of the way down and you will find him at the back of what looks like a scrapyard of old Army wagons on the Left hand side.

Gimme a shout if you need a hand, I'm local to you too. :)

I've been to this place too Skynet. He's got loads of ex-military Defenders. I'm sure there are many members on here that could spend the day in there and come out dribbling (oh, they went in there like that!! :D). He's not so hot on the engine management side of things though. He was convinced my engine was shot because after reving it up and then letting it idle the exhaust was warm, then after about 30 seconds the engine tone changed and the exhaust got hot. Of course what he was experiencing was the EGR valve shutting, the engine was fine. For the down and out mechanics I'm sure he's the dogs bollocks.
