Freelander 1 TD4 Jumping Injector....?!

Good day to you all! I hope it's as sunny where you are as it is in my little slice of Suffolk!

I've just installed a new turbo cartridge and given the inlets and manifolds a bit of a de-coke.

I put her back together with new gaskets/seals/washers throughout. I made sure to replace the injectors in the same order they were removed. I had a friend turn her over while i bled out all the bubbles from the fuel rail.

Now, while i was under there, i noticed the far left injector seems to jump up and down when the engine is turning over.
While i had the injectors out, i gave them a good clean with grey scotch-bright and a little duck oil. I made sure to keep them in the correct order and replaced the injector sealing washers when i refitted them.

The engine won't fire so i'm assuming it has something to do with the jumping injector. Maybe i've buggered it up by cleaning it....?

Any advice gratefully received.

You have not fitted the injector / clamp correctly - sort that first.. get a Haynes Manual or preferably Rave. - if you haven't got a link to rave I will post it shortly - just uploading it to my drive.

I've removed all four injectors - again, replaced copper sealing washers - again, refitted injectors/clamps etc and torqued it all down - again.

One injector is still jumping. The only positive being that the high pressure air/fuel mix seems to be exiting past the injector and out of the tube the injector sits in. I say this is positive because i'd rather see it coming out the top than have it forced back into the diesel system.

The way the injectors are mounted, with the threaded posts, clamps and nuts, i don't think anything but the injector itself can be at fault.

Absolutely agree Craig.. time for a new one unfortunately.
They are seldom a problem so a good S/H one should suffice.
 
the only way a injector would "jump" is if it is coming apart and the top half is jumping but I have never seen this, or not put in properly

I'm with you, never seen an injector behave like this. Every time it injects it hops up about 3mm, just far enough for the mixture to be forced out of the cylinder. It appears at first glance, to be a simple case of improper installation. I triple checked all bolts/nuts were torqued down correctly the first time i installed the injectors. Upon noticing the anomaly I proceeded to remove the fuel rail and all four injectors before visually inspecting all components for obvious signs of wear/damage. After reinstalling the injectors etc the fault was still present.

The new recon injector will be here by the end of the week. I might even risk catastrophe and film the little blighter so you can see what i mean.

I'm hoping that by returning the offending article to Landrover i might discover what had gone wrong.

I'll keep you posted.
