hi, i've got a TD4 on an 03 plate. the other day i was chatting to a mechanic friend about changing the cam belt on my freelander and he said he thoough it was a timing chain as appose to a cam belt in which case it wouldn't need changing? any body know if this is true as he wasn't 100%? Car has done 60,000 miles by the way...

as op says ,td4 has a chain, they do in most cases last the life of the engine.the indi chap who i take my td4 to was telling me the chains can get worn and rattle,he has in the past changed one, but not an easy job.tim

Why do many cars even use a belt given the risk? Sure, failure is often the result of poor maintenance but it's still a great risk. Surely it makes sense to use a chain? I think I asked someone before and they said "because chains can be nosier". However, I've had 3 cars with chains (2 of which were BMWs) and they were pretty much silent. Ofc, I can't say the same about the FL but that's more road noise than anything.

Coz
A) it's cheaper.
B) it's easier.
C) it would need lubrication.
D) the manufacturers don't care once they sold the vehicle.
E) who pays if it breaks?
F) what benefit does engine longevity bring to the manufacturer?

Hi, Yep, what can confuse is that the maintenance schedule states that the auxiliary drive belt needs changing at 8 years or 96000 miles. This is the "fan" belt, well would have been in the old days. Sometimes this gets mis-interpreted as the cam belt in some publications / articles.

With a cam chain at least you get a good warning that it needs changing unlike a belt that just goes for the hell of it one morning doh!

I wonder what % of new car buyers know if they are getting a belt or chain?
