Hi

just removed my injectors of a 2003 td4 with 101k miles on it because I have had trouble starting it.

I attach a photo. Two of the injectors had gunk on the cam cover around them and the injectors themselves look somewhat dirtier than the other two. Is this just a return line o ring or supply line leak or does it spell something more worrying ?

Any advice appreciated.

One injector copper washer has been leaking, which is why it's dirty.
What positions did they come out? The dirty ones look to be covered in oil, which could come from the breather cover, or maybe the bolt missing in the timing chain, but knowing where they came from would help here.

What would have been better would have been to do a leak back test on the injectors first before removing them, also a live data reading on a T4 or similar diagnostics, you could clean them all up, remove the tips and clean them out so the spray pattern is good, but very time consuming and delicate job, which as to be done under excellent clean conditions.

Clean the tip before and during removing the tip.

removing the tips and cleaning them out does not always work, as the injector could have damage inside.

Spray carb cleaner through the tip so you see that the spray pattern is equal from the five points.

When refitting the injectors always use new copper washers.

They can be taken fully apart and cleaned

The trouble starting could also have been the fuel pump, filter, or the regulator O-rings ? personally i would clean in and around all the injectors ports, clean the out side of the injectors, add new washers refit and do a leak back test, then go from there.

The dirtiest is on the far right as you sit in the car looking forward. The next dirty one is next to it in position 2 3 and 4 are much cleaner

So they're cylinder No1 to 4 from the top?
Is the bolt missing from the timing chain cover? Or maybe the engine has been run previously with the timing cover bolt missing?
It looks like dirty engine oil contamination to me, which isn't injector related.
No1 has definitely been leaking at the copper seal, but the others have been sealing ok.

Define difficult starting.
Have the glow plugs been replaced?
Did you replace the regulator O ring?

The previous owner said it had progressively got harder to start over the last few months. By the time I got it I could start it but after a lot of starter time ie over a minute and the battery was going flat. Once started it appeared to run ok.
Now will not start at all.
I have not looked at glow plugs as someone told me a td4 would start without them.
