Hello Everyone! I'm back in Freelander ownership having owned a facelift Freelander 1 td4 about 10 years ago. I'd forgotten how much I love the things and when one came up at a good price I bought it. It has the usual Freelander issues which I'm slowly working through, including a dodgy injector. I'm told injector number 4 readings are not right but I've been told injector 4 is the oil cap side, then I've also been told it's the gearbox side! Does anyone have the definitive answer? Sorry if this is an obvious answer and has been answered before, I've looked through the posts and cannot find the answer. Ta in advance for any info.

Cylinder 1 is engine front (if mounted traditionally for a rear wheel drive!) so on a Freelander with a transverse engine cylinder 1 is the water pump and crank pulley end.
Amazing, ta Andyfreelandy! On a separate note I'm doing the thermostat mod you've done IE the 32mm to 38mm coupling and back to 32mm inline thermostat for an auto. No way could I get the gates thermostat in enough to make it work with the original hose - I reckon I need to hit the gym 
Andy is quite right, cylinder 1 is at the drive belt end of the engine, and 4 at the gearbox end of the engine.
I can cast some insight as to why you've been told the opposite. The Freelander 2, which is a completely different vehicle has it's cylinder numbers the other way round, i.e. No 1 is at the gearbox end, and No 4 is at the drive belt end.

Thank you, that would explain it, I had a Freelander 2 a couple of years ago as well. I prefer the simplicity of working on the original Freelander to be honest. This forum is amazing, you can find out so much from it! I'd better get the spanners out at the weekend!
