Hi Everyone, just had a mechanic round to look over my TD4 (2002) as coolant level keeps dropping, he's done a pressure test to check radiator for leaks etc and all was ok. He's then tested head gasket with some sort of dye that is supposed to stay blue, but has turned green . . . so he's said head gasket is on its way out, does this sound right?
It's a very VERY expensive problem to fix, so want to make sure its definately that before commiting, or making a decision to sell :(
Any help, advice greatly appreciated. thanks in advance!

What would everyone do, would you spend the money on fixing it or sell the car? I feel like for what im gonna get selling it, might aswell just spend that on it and keep the car aswell? Dilema!

How much is a 2002 Freelander with whatever mileage your vehicle has worth on the open market? What general condition is it in? Are there other potential problems brewing in the background - i.e. is it a potential moneypit? Against that, how much will it cost to have it fixed? Are you in a position to cut your losses and move on to something else?

As I understand it, Freelanders don't hold value too well. It may well be beyond economic repair if you're paying a garage?? You need to do some research.

It's a simple question of economics and a bit of a gamble on your part, but ultimately it's your call. With a car of that age, there are too many variables for any a definitive answer. Sorry, I guess that doesn't help much.

P.S. You should get yourself a Defender - if the engine blows, you can pick up a replacement on ebay for 10p.
