hi Fellas,

I'm determined to solve this issue now, since after about two years of never seeing my glow plug lamp on in the car - even through two worse winters and the current -12 that it is here where i am in the Czech Republic - im fairly sure its not because the ambient temperature is too high or its so lightining fast to heat up i cant see it......it always used to be visible before.

Where would i start? Would it be the dash light, the relay or the plugs themselves? I can find a load of glow plugs on ebay for about 19 pounds, are the ok?

Where is the relay located, and is there an identification number of some sort on it?

Car still starts, but when its been standing a while at anthing from -3 it takes a while.

Any advice or hepl is appreciated :)

Most possibly

RTFM or

Down load Rave or

:search:

I did a search and did read rather a lot of posts that end up going downt the "its too warm for it to light up yet..wait till winter thread" and peter out...

...or make a few suggestions then also dwindle without any further info regarding a solution.

Obviously though i could be a bit blind...so i thought i'd ask :)

I have a Rave, which seems to mention not that much about the whole glow plug thing.

So have you cheched the b&**dy BULB? :D :D :D

nope :D:D see your point, but im holding out to see if anyone has some amazing pearls of wisdom that might negate the need to sit outside freezing my testicles off taking apart my dash bit by bit (not done it before...so will probably taky a while)

You know, like somone here will come on and say "oh yeah, try this, worked for me and didnt need to do this and this and this"

Then, when that fails, ill go sit outside and freeze taking things apart :)

fuse 14 just for warning light.
at ignition on before a cold start test for 12v output at glowplug relay in e-box, there is an output for each glowplug.

its a quick start system not like the old wait till the light go's out method , cos the plug is so effecient it will heat the fuel on contact ,all modern doozles are the same. . . . .:):):)

Ming: understood - but ever since i had the car the light used to come on, even if just for a second and i havent seen it on for ages. even when its -15 outside and the car is an icicle on wheels :)

you can easy proof the glow plugs. . . . .its just 12 Voltaire's so put an auto test bulb or avo on volts one + the glow plug lead [any one] other - on earth [-ve] get a mate to turn ignition to 1st position an you should see 12v or bulb light providing ambient temperature is below about +2 deg . . . . .if not then you've a fault note the glow plug will stay on till a preset time after engine run . . . .hope this helps ya :)

Hi all - so, a quick update - i have now got around to getting an ECT sensor for my TD4, hoping it would help cure the problem with the glw plugs.

Just a couple of Q's -

1) is the ECT sensor the source of the temp guage temperature information?

2) in Rave there is a Glow Plug ECU - why, when i talk to Land Rover do they all pretend it doesn't exist and isn't available?

3) anyone had a Glow Plug ECU fail?

4) if the ECT does not help, and i have new plugs, new relay, what next?

1) yes and if it was your problem you would expect the gauge to be reading high

2) must be one and the same item. it's in the e-box

3) no

4) you don't say whether you have tested if the plugs are getting 12v at ignition on.

Since you have now got a spare ECT sender you could connect it to the harness and sit it in a cup of ice to give a low temp and then test for 12v at a glowplug when ign first turned on.

Thanks for the suggestion RE the spare ECT.

Unfortunately i now may have bigger problems with the car  so going to focus on those.
