hello all.
My freelander failed to start and run properly after a short drive.
It would start and run for a few seconds and then stall.
I lifted the bonnet and when the ignition is turned on and the rear wheel arch pump is priming I can hear a sort of hissing from near the high pressure pump.
No pools of fuel though??
Fuel line leak or seals in the pump itself?
Or is this noise normal?
If I remove pump do I need a tool to lock timing or is the sprocket removal tool enough?
I'm thinking pump rebuild time.
Once it's running I have no other issues.

Hi Round.
yes to remove the HPFP you will need to leave the sprocket tool in place, refurbish the pump and refit.
 
The HPFP isn't timed to the engine. The sprocket simply picks up a drive from the timing chain. The tool holds the sprocket in place so that the pump can be removed without the timing chain going slack or the sprocket dropping into the sump.
Have you checked the HPFR pressure? What makes you feel that the pump is at fault?
 
This hissing noise from that area at prime.
The area looks pretty clean around it so thinking maybe some diesel is squirting out.
I will obviously check hoses when removed but I have a seal kit for it anyway so thinking go for it whilst I investigate the hissing sound.
What other possibilities?

After reading lots of threads recently about hissing from the HPFP, I thought I'd have a listen to mine. It does indeed hiss, if that's what it's described as. I'd call it more of a high speed buzz my self. It sounds like a solenoid valve being modulated to me, but I could be wrong. Incidentally, my wife's new Ford Kuga also makes a similar noise for a few seconds after it's been turned off.
 
I'm going to get my injectors tested. £17.50 each. Hoping they come out with ease...
I suspect fuel is leaking into oil as it seems very thin and a little above level. It doesn't smell of diesel though.
I suspect 1 is failing.
Whilst they are off to be tested I will rebuild the HPFP anyway as I have the tool and seals. Can't hurt.
I have a spare cam sensor somewhere so once done if no different I will try that.
Then I guess the fuel rail pressure sensor.
 
The HPFR sensor is a known week point. It can suffer from corrosion on the terminals. So many suffer that LR released a replacement sensor harness and fitting instructions for it. The replacement harness has a green or light blue sensor plug. The factory plug is black, which makes identification easy.
 
Ok so I had 1 injector rebuilt and I changed the cam position sensor whilst I was there.

Seems to be all good now.

No smoke on start up and starts on the button.

Hopefully it will continue to be fine

PS Round, how is the FL now a month on from having the injector replaced

These are the part numbers.
STC4768 Fuel sensor
YMQ503320 Harness
The sensor is expensive at around £150 or so.
The harness can be found for about £50 with the VAT.
