Think the fuel filter went to the splash panel after the 2003 facelift...my 2003 TD4 has the fuel filter and LP pump under the bonnet...

That's the one!

Now you just have to fit it!

Be prepared for rusted, seized bolts - corroded 'pop'-rivets - earth terminal corroded and fallen off.

The fuel pipes are easily unclipped and you are best to have the whole unit on the bench before you try getting the filter out of the plastic housing.

It'll probably be as tight as hell due to salt and crud sticking to the aluminium casing.

I coated the casing and the pump in grease before I put it all back together.

Good luck and enjoy the job!

Thanks Sing,

I think the last time this filter was changed was three years ago by the guy who has been servicing it for the last few years so hopefully it won't be to bad (famous last words) Anyway that will be the last job on the list got to make a start soon on all the other things to do. Once I get the lights in my pit fixed I'll be away LOL.

Once again thanks to all who have given me advice over the last couple of weeks, it's much appreciated.

When you get the tray on the bench there is a removable clip , that should make the filter easier to remove !

You also have to strip it down if you need to replace the pop rivets, its also a good idea to drain the pre filter first as you'll fill your boots with diesel if you don't.

Changed the fuel filter on my 03 TD4 and can confirm this is a hard job! My filter is in the rear wheel arch and was stuck solid. Lots of cursing and hammering and it finally came out - then the new one just slides in! On a plus side the two bolts were OK and the rivets holding the plastic frame together are still holding.
Lots of fuel everywhere but most soaked into the back of my ovies and I'd say this job was harder than changing the rear diff mounts. Glad its done but do allow more time for what should be a simple job ie two bolts and two connectors and slide the thing out!

That sounds like you had an easy time then. ;)

On mine the two bolts sheared off - the rivet broke - the earth terminal had rusted away and half a litre of diesel ran up my arm - lovely. :p

Job well done there - just you have to do it again in another 60K LOL :D

Earth cable - yes i know there should be one and I did put the clip back in place but no cable.
I know what to expect next time and will allow longer! Still trying to get rid of the diesel smell - tools wont rust!

Did you smother the new filter in copper ease before you put it back in ???

Err, no!

Got to do the brake drums soon so when I'm in there will give it a quick smear - don't want to go through that again.

Thanks for the tip, I wish I had read all the post before doing the job, I didn't because I thought it was a simple job. Lesson learnt always do your research no matter how simple the job seems.
Thanks all.
