Hi All,

i've owned my Freelander TD4 Es premium since 2004 and totally out of character it's let me wife down today.

the car is a 2003 Freelander I TD4

Driving along an A road, Engine light came on, she pulled immediately to side of the road, the engine then stopped and now refuses to restart, it turns over fine but doesn't want to fire up.

Any suggestions where to look first without the aid of a HawkEye

Its not the relay, its not the fuel cut off, so I'm guessing it could be fuel filter - never changed and the cars done 90K or the fuel pump itself.

I'm confused as mine is an '03 plate.

I've just had my head under the car whilst turning the ignition on and off and can't hear anything. No pump priming. Should I?

There's a plastic cover in front of OSR wheel arch with something like 'Fuel Filter Cover, May 2003' written on it, can I assume that this is a single pump car and that the pump is under this cover and is that where the filter is also located or is that in the Front wheel arch, as I can't see anything in there looking from within the engine bay. :-(

Suggestions/help most welcome.

Classic fuel pump failure symptoms although I wouldn't rule out fuel filter.

Your car will just have the single LP pump under the rear wheel arch. If you can't hear it prime when the ignition is first switched on then it's safe to say it'll have gone. You may be able to spark it into life with a sharp tap but it will only be a temporary fix.

I'm not 100% as my Freelander is a 2002 with the In-tank LP and the filter in the engine bay but IIRC from reading this site both the filter and pump sit behind a plastic cover in the Rear Wheel arch on the drivers side.

A search on here will probably give you a lot of tips on how to get to it and change it out.
 
Located next to pump in rear wheel arch, do a search on here on changing as its easier to remove both pump and filter to change
 
Fuel pump failure at around 90K is to be expected - they can fail from about 70K onwards.

Mine failed at 86K - apparently very few make it to 100K

Drop the whole assembly from the rear wheel-arch, and change the pump and the filter at the same time.

Get a genuine LandRover pump - not an eBay cheapy - unless you want to do the job again in 3 months time.

Jobs a bit of a fiddle and messy to do - but plenty info on here.

Thanks everyone, all stripped down. No life in the pump even when applying 12v direct, so it defiantly looks like the problem.

New Pump and filter tomorrow and hopefully all sorted.
