Manual: PG1 gearbox :)

thks, only reason i ask was mine was an auto and had to extend mine

the IRD pipe was already extended in metal from the factory and sat right up against the bulkhead, assume urs is the same

another thing u have to be careful of is ur alternator when wading

There a number of older posts I've seen with this problem [dead alternators] cropping up. I haven't seen this mentioned so much recently though? Is there a solution to the problem - and what "is" the problem? Water or mud damaging bearings or the commuter contacts? Would adding a splash shield help or hinder?

So many questions! LOL

Muddy water will make short work of the alternator. The abrasive particles grind the brushes and comutator to nothing. The bearings take a pounding too, if water gets into them. There's little you can do to solve this issue long term, except avoid deep water or buy a V6.

That's what I thought Nodge - unless the mud spray comes from a particular direction? The wheel arches are gaping open on the FL1 - and particularly noticeably so on the 1.8. Has anyone left a gopro under the bonnet when laning to get an idea of the patterns of water spray? Is that something so crazy only I'd think of doing that? LOL

Gary, no, not yet. Just thinking about it and waiting for the right Discovery. D2 I think is the most attractive to me - but ideally a cosmetically scruffy city car that doesn't have too much chassis rust. Ideally a basic car without sunroofs ("they all leak sir") and a purchase price of around £1k... not much to ask eh? LOL

I am in no rush - I'm loving the "little donkey" (thanks @neilly - it might have to keep that name LOL) - and the little Hippo has a nice "David v Goliath" vibe going ;) :) You get a lot of capability for not a lot of money from these little cars :D

Do you not have the plastic shieldings fitted that fill the gap between chassis and undertray?

Interestingly, they are only about £170 each :eek::eek::eek::eek:

Bit cheaper from a breakers I should think, there's 3 screws that fit them to the underside of the chassis rail.

Yes, they’re present and correct (£170?!?)

The holes I’m thinking of are where the steering arms pass through the inner wing?

Mine was missing that specific splash guard when I got it. Went to the scrappy to get a replacement and they said I could have it for nowt.

The holes where the steering arms go through are of no consequence. If water goes in, it just runs out the bottom, in front of the bulkhead.

I'm still thinking that an underbonnet mounted GoPro would be an interesting exercise to see whether a shield might be able to at least reduce some of the muck thrown at the alternator... :)

@gstuart - any luck finding any pictures details? Don't worry if not: I doubt it is rocket science LOL :)

Where the breather tubes just standard rubber hose of a suitable diameter to fit over the casings' breather pipes?
