TD4 Clutch Problem

Hi all,
I've got a TD4 which i had for 6 months now, i've done quite a bit of towing with it no problems what so ever and this morning my dad borrowed it and he's got 50 miles down the motorway towing and the clutch has gone, he tells me it stinks of clutch and the pedal is on the floor, however after leaving it for an hour (awaiting recovery) he tells me the clutch pedal is back and it will drive but the clutch still slips slightly.
Now what i want to know is if i'm going to swap the clutch assembly does the slave need changing and apparently slave's for a TD4 are like Hens Teeth.

How long does it take do a clutch roughly?? I'm fairly competent and i got the kit.

Is your slave leaking? Is the master leaking? Has your clutch fluid reservoir lost any fluid? Should be like 5mm below top (iirc). Have you attempted to bleed it? As per LR specifications there is a limited amount of air induction into the system over time and merely requires bleeding.

And the g/b removal isnt to hard, just quite a bit to remove imho. Airtool job, its about 5hours.
 
Just happened to mine - with aftermarket parts you are looking at £600 because the job is so big you may as well change slave clutch pressure plate and flywheel

Then 5 or 6 hours labour!

Mine's being done on Saturday
 
I wouldnt replace the flywheel just because you've got the gearbox out though.. Last i heard they were £444.40 plus the dreaded. Though i think since then they have increased in price. You can actually check to see if the duelmass in within spec using a protractor and a piece of paper, pro tools are pro :).

Definately agree with ^ on the slave though , they aint the best and reasonably common, its worth replacing if the box is out imho.
 
Flywheel is £336 delivered - ordered mine yesterday got it today.

I have a shimmy on acceleration so it may be the flywheel - I am told 120k is about it - I have 93k so it's gonna be changed.

cheers people, just going make a start on it now, i aint gonna swap the flywheel because who knows if i'll still have the car at 120k miles.

Well mine is bring done at present - my guy took old and put in new on an afternoon - just finishing off and doing a wheel bearing BUT I looked through the old parts - oh dear!

It's done 93k and someone had fitted a clutch previously but no release bearing slave kit or flywheel.

Slave was knackered - leaking like anything also release bearing was running rough.

Clutch plate and pressure plate ok as it had been changed previously but I renewed it anyhow.

Flywheel quite a few burn marks and a lot of play in it - I am glad I had a new one to replace it as I wouldn't like to have driven much on it.

Anyhow you will see yours - if you are doing yourself then I suppose it's not a problem if you have to delay the job - I would have done the same.

One rear wheel bearing was gone with me - the noise in the vehicle was way put of proportion to just a wheel bearing.

I will get it back Monday now.
 
angeloc - if you mind me asking what was total price of clutch & flywheel change?

Already had my dmf fail in April on my Mondeo TDCi. Had to change DMF, clutch, slave & new starter cost £850.

My 05 freelander has done 93k and Ive had to bleed the clutch out when first purchased in Feb. Clutch is still stiff so was planning to change my master cylinder. Just making plans for when I have to change the clutch.
 
Yes no problem - I posted the costs earlier.

I sourced the parts from different suppliers

In all it cost me about £600 that was for all parts only
DMF Clutch & Pressure plate & release bearing and slave & guide

Labour - not sure yet it's about 5 hours - my guy is good to me so will not be too much.
 
Just got my td4 back from garage after having new slave cylinder and clutch fitted.Cost £616.00 total,parts,labour and vat but struggling to get into gear. Returning to garage to complain that it is worse now than when it went in.
 
I had mine done and also changed the Duel Mass Flywheel - total cost was around £800 and my clutch was not good coming out BUT I knew it needed to bed and settle after such major work. The mating surfaces need to flatten out. A few hundred miles and it's superb now - so it may be you need to use it to settle it all in.

I also find that any fluid change nerds tine and use to get it working correctly.

Had my td4 clutch and slave cylinder done 2 months ago cost £365 all in and mine was a bit hard to get a gear at first, however 2 weeks later the clutch seemed to bite further up the pedal travel and gear selection got better , maybe stick with it a while .

I have been running for about a week since got Freelander back from garage and the clutch is getting better but I have just noticed on my invoice that they have put EP80/90 gearoil in the gearbox and I am sure I have read that this is no good for the gearbox in a TD4. Can anybody tell me if this is ok or would it be better to change it.

MTF 94 Manual Gear Oil iirc.


EP90 would make gear selection stiff from cold. Its like golden syrup. Great for them traktor diffs though :)
